A latch needle () having on its latch () a latch head () that is provided with a recess or a depression () for receiving a section of a tip () of the hook (), said tip having the configuration of a truncated cone. The latch head () is wider than the latch shaft () of the latch (), however, distinctly narrower than the needle shaft (). Due to this measure, too great an expansion of the loops during the casting-off process is avoided, and the risk of a collision of the latch head with other components, for example, sinkers, is reduced.

In order to reduce the impact speed of a latch () of a needle () in back position by reducing the acceleration effect originating from a half stitch (), the upward jaw slope () of the needle () is subdivided into different regions. A first section () ascends at a relatively large acute angle &#x3b3; of, for example, up to 20&#xb0;, preferably 16&#xb0;. Just after the half stitch () has contacted the inside () of the latch (), said half stitch arrives on a second section () of the upward jaw slope (). The second section () is a straight section which ascends at a smaller acute angle &#x3b2; of, for example, only 14&#xb0; or less. Consequently, an acceleration effect from the half stitch () on the latch () is avoided over a wide pivot range of said latch. Preferably, this acceleration-free pivot range is at least 90&#xb0;, preferably greater than 110&#xb0;.
