A method for the production of an improved water soluble resin binder for laminating printing inks has been discovered. The method comprises esterifying the carboxylated Diels Alder adduct produced from the reaction of rosin and at least one carboxylated dienophile with a sufficient amount of at least one polyol to produce a modified rosin having an acid number greater than 157. The modified rosin is reacted with a sufficient amount of an acrylic copolymer having an acid number greater than 180 under esterification conditions between 175 &deg; C. and 185 &deg; C. for a time sufficient to produce a resin binder having an acid number greater than 157. A laminating ink formulation of the invention comprises water, pigment, styrene-acrylic varnish, shellac varnish, alkanol and the improved water soluble resin binder of the invention as described above.

Process for the production of water soluble modified rosin ester vehicles for laminating inks

Process for the production of water soluble modified rosin ester

A heat-sealable adhesive for dissimilar substrates is disclosed comprising an organic solvent suspension of a graft copolymer of an A-B-A terblock copolymeric rubber, olefin copolymer and olefin terpolymer. Processing conditions are improved over known adhesive preparation conditions.

A thermosetting printing ink composition comprising a functional copolymer of a thermosettable polyester and a polysiloxane, a pigment, a crosslinking agent and a curing catalyst which may be a strong acid or a metal salt thereof. The composition desirably also includes a reactive diluent such as a glycol, glycol ether or alcohol. The compositions are especially useful for imprinting metal containers such as beer and soda cans.

Thermosetting printing ink composition

A flexible packaging printing ink is formulated from a copolymer of polyethyleneneglycol methacrylate and a polyamide resin, pigment, solvent and cellulose acetate butyrate. The polyamide resin is prepared by condensing a dibasic acid mixture with a diamine mixture. The dibasic acid mixture comprises about 0.5 to 0.8 equivalents of a C.sub.20 -C.sub.44 dibasic acid mixture comprised of about 60 to 100% dimers, 0 to 40% trimers and 0 to 5% monomers, and about 0.2-0.7 equivalents of at least one C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 dibasic acid such as azelaic acid and adipic acid, while the diamine mixture comprises about 0.5-0.8 equivalents of piperazine or a substituted piperazine and the balance comprises at least one C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkyl diamine such as ethylene diamine.

Flexible packaging printing ink containing cellulose acetate butyrate

A carboxy acid-terminated polyamide is reacted with an alkylene glycol, a polyalkylene glycol, nitrogen base or an alkanol amine (followed by an alkanoic acid) to provide a block copolymer. These block copolymers are especially useful as pigment dispersants, i.e. for preparing solvent-based packaging inks (i.e. packaging gravure and flexographic inks).

Block copolymer from carboxy terminated polyamide and polyol

A water-dispersible graft copolymer of a polyamide and at least one acrylic monomer is prepared by reacting the polyamide with the acrylic monomer(s) in an alcohol solution in the presence of a free radical peroxidic initiator. The graft copolymer is particularly useful as the resin component of a water-based printing ink.

Water-based printing ink prepared from polyamide/acrylic graft copolymers

Quaternized oligourethanes, useful as dispersing agents in preparing high-solids pigment concentrates for use in manufacturing inks, especially inks intended for use in gravure and packaging applications. The novel oligourethanes are prepared by reacting an appropriate ester or alcohol with a hydroxyethylimidazoline and polyisocyanate followed by quaternization with acids or alkyl derivatives of acids.
