A system and method to determine health prognostics for selection and management of a tool for deployment in a downhole environment are described. The system includes a database to store life cycle information of the tool, the life cycle information including environmental and operational parameters associated with use of the tool. The system also includes a memory device to store statistical equations to determine the health prognostics of the tool, and a processor to calibrate the statistical equations and build a time-to-failure model of the tool based on a first portion of the life cycle information in the database.

Probabilistic determination of health prognostics for selection and management of tools in a downhole environment

A resistivity device for downhole use with a nonconducting mud injects a current at a frequency sufficiently high to pass capacitively through the mud and a mud cake into the formation. The frequency is further selected so that the impedance due to the dielectric constant of the formation is small compared to the formation resistivity. Dual frequency measurements may be used to further minimize the effects of the mud and mud cake resistivity. When multiple frequency measurements are used, frequency focusing may be used to get an estimate of formation resistivity that is independent of near borehole effects.

Apparatus and method for wellbore resistivity measurements in oil-based muds using capacitive coupling

An apparatus for obtaining resistivity images of a borehole includes an array of measure electrodes separated from a pad or the body of the instrument by a focusing electrode. The focusing electrode is maintained at a slightly higher potential than the measure electrodes. The apparatus is primarily intended for use with conducting fluids but may also be used with non-conducting fluids. A modulated electrical current with a carrier frequency of 1 MHz is injected into the formation. When used with a non-conducting fluid, capacitive coupling between the electrode and the conductive formation is provided by the dielectric of fluid. When used with a conducting borehole fluid, an additional capacitor may be incorporated into the circuit. The current in the measure electrode is indicative of the conductivity of the formation. To avoid cross-talk between conductors in an isolator section between the current source and the measure electrode, signals indicative of the measure currents are demodulated to a frequency of 1.1 kHz. This makes it possible to use the configuration of prior art devices designed for conductive coupling between the logging tool and the formation.

Apparatus and method for wellbore resistivity imaging using capacitive coupling

A magnetic coupling for substantially synchronously transferring linear motion through a non magnetic barrier from a first movable element to a second movable element. The coupling comprises magnets disposed at spaced apart locations along the first element. The magnets each have a magnetization direction substantially perpendicular to a direction of motion of the first element along the non magnetic barrier. The coupling includes magnets disposed at spaced apart locations along the second element at locations corresponding to locations of the magnets op the first element. Each of the magnets on the second element has a magnetization direction inclined at an oblique angle with respect to the magnetization direction of the corresponding magnet so as to capture magnetic flux from the magnets on the first element when either of the elements is moved along the barrier.

A well logging instrument string including a first section adapted to be operated substantially in contact with a wall of a wellbore, a coupling connected at one end to one end of the first section. The coupling includes first and second flexible joints for enabling relative angular deflection between the first section and a second section. The coupling includes a biasing mechanism for urging at least one of either the first or the second flexible joints, or both, to assume their positions of maximum angular deflection.
