A sub-caliber bullet with an aerodynamic shape has long-range accuracy due to a high muzzle velocity and reduced time of flight to a target. The bullet has forward and aft portions and a mid-portion. The forward portion has a density in excess of 10/cmwhile the mid-portion has a lower density. The bullet has an aspect ratio of at least 5:1 and a diameter, d, that satisfies a Power Law equation:*()where D is a maximum bullet diameter, L is the length, x is a distance rearward from a nose of the bullet and n is a Power Law exponent that is between 0.5 and 0.75. In some embodiments, a blind bore extends into the mid-portion from the aft portion and a sustainer propellant within the bore ignites as the bullet exits a gun muzzle to provide a velocity boost and to overcome aerodynamic drag.

A propellant burning system and method useful in a rocket motor or projectile firing device burns a continuous main propellant grain of relatively soft propellant material selected from uncatalyzed or partially catalyzed propellants. A separating device divides the propellant grain into a large number of fragments of high-surface area during the burn and an activation mechanism for causing said separating device to operate on the main propellant grain and to ignite and control the burning thereof.

Propulsion system

A kinetic energy penetrator assembly includes a motor casing having an aft pening. A nozzle with a nozzle opening is seated in the aft opening of the casing and confines expanding gases produced by burning propellant in the casing to a configuration for applying a thrust to the casing. An aft pusher plate is connected to a plug which plugs the nozzle opening and which has an aft space for receiving expanding gases. A penetrator rod is connected to the forward end of the motor casing and includes a bore riding sabot having substantially the same diameter as the diameter of the pusher plate and an aft portion of the motor casing. The penetrator assembly is meant to be launched from a gun with expanding gases in the gun barrel pushing against the pusher plate and ejecting the penetrator at some velocity from the barrel bore. An initiator carried in the pusher plate and nozzle plug begins to burn when it is exposed to the expanding gases in the gun barrel and, after a selected period of time, ignites propellant in the motor casing which first boosts the velocity of the penetrator assembly and thereafter sustains its velocity. The sabot is designed to peel away from the rod after the penetrator leaves the barrel for producing an aerodynamically advantageous configuration for the penetrator assembly.

Chaff for protecting a ballistic missile from detection by radar during re-entry into the atmosphere is shown to be made up of a plurality of dart like elements, each fabricated from pyrolytically formed graphite and shaped so as to follow a ballistic path through the atmosphere upon release from said missile and to appear as a resonant dipole to interrogating signals from a radar.

Re-entry chaff dart

Organic materials are separated and retrieved by mixing them with a liquid medium which is solid at room temperature and which is at atmosphere pressure. The material and medium are pumped by an electromagnetic pump while creating turbulence and then the velocity of the medium is decreased while heat is applied. Gases generated during the application of heat are collected. The medium is then cooled and returned to the pool at atmospheric pressure.

Thermo-mechanical apparatus and method

Heat exchange apparatus for improving the efficiency of a fireplace is disclosed in the form of a plurality of heat transfer conduits connected at one end to a manifold and containing a plurality of heat exchange elements. A fan means directs air through the manifold and then through the conduits for contact with the heat exchange elements to thereby heat the air which is then discharged into a room.
