A heavy weight drill pipe may include a tube body formed of AISI 1340 alloy steel, and first and second tool joints at respective ends of the tube body, and which are formed of an AISI 41XX series alloy steel. The first and second tool joints may be welded to the tube body at a weld line within a weld region. A Charpy impact toughness at the weld line or surrounding weld region may be least 12 ft-lbs. (16.5 N-m). Yield and tensile strengths at the weld line or weld region may be at least 65 ksi (448.0 MPa) and at least 106 ksi (731.0 MPa), respectively. Material properties at the weld line or weld region may be achieved by heat treating after welding. Heat treating may include austenitizing, quenching, and tempering the weld line and/or the surrounding weld region.

Heat treated heavy weight drill pipe

A heavy weight drill pipe for use in a downhole tool. The heavy weight drill pipe may include a tool joint made of as first steel alloy selected from the group consisting of AISI 4135, AISI 4137, AISI 4140, AISI 4142, AISI 4145, and AISI 4147. The tool joint may have as radial thickness between about 3.0 cm and about 5.7 cm. The heavy weight drill pipe may also include as pipe made of as second steel alloy selected from the group consisting of AISI 4135, AISI 4137, AISI 4140, AISI 4142, AISI 4145, and AISI 4147. The pipe may have a radial thickness between about 1.6 cm and about 3.3 cm. A weld region may be formed between the tool joint and the pipe. The weld region may be formed by friction welding the tool joint to the pipe.

A hardfacing composition essentially consisting of from about 50 to 75 percent by weight of a carbide phase having a particle size distribution of &#xb1;20% or less of a median particle size; and from about 25 to 50 percent by weight of binder phase is disclosed. A rolling cone drill bit is provided that has gage inserts on the first row from the bit axis to cut to full gage diameter that have a cutting portion enhanced with a layer of super abrasive material. The gage cutting surface has a center axis that is canted to be more normal to the gave curve such that its point of contact at gage is away from the thinner portion of the layer of super abrasive material.

Self relieving seals of this invention comprise an elastomeric seal body having a first sealing surface and a second sealing surface for contact with respective drill bit sealing surfaces. The seal includes a pair of external surfaces that each extend along the seal body between the first and second sealing surfaces. The seal includes one or more relief ports that are disposed through the seal body and that have openings through each of the seal body external surfaces. The relief port can be specially configured, e.g., have different diameter sections of constant or variable dimensions, to provide a degree of control over pressure equalization through the seal body when the seal is loaded within the drill bit. The seal may include an element, e.g., solid, tubular, or porous, disposed within the relief port to provide a further desired degree of control over pressure equalization through the seal when the seal is loaded within the drill bit. Surface features, on the seal or the drill bit, can be provided to offset the relief port opening from the rock bit so that it is not blocked off. The seal can include a valve mechanism to provide a further degree of control over fluid passage through the relief port.

A rolling cone drill bit is provided that has gage inserts on the first row from the bit axis to cut to full gage diameter that have a cutting portion enhanced with a layer of super abrasive material. The gage cutting surface has a center axis that is canted to be more normal to the gage curve such that its point of contact at gage is away from the thinner portion of the layer of super abrasive material.

A high-temperature lubricant is shown and described. The lubricant includes a base stock and about 1 to about 20 weight percent zirconium 2-ethylhexanoate. The lubricant may also include about 1 to about 9 weight percent bismuth 2-ethylhexanoate.

Drill bit lubricant with enhanced load carrying/anti wear properties

A lubricating grease is specific for a rock bit for drilling subterranean formations. The rock bit body includes a plurality of journal pins, each having a bearing surface, with a cutter cone mounted on each journal pin and also including a bearing surface. A grease reservoir provides lubricating grease to such bearing surfaces. The grease composition adjacent the bearing surfaces comprises a lubricating base oil, sufficient thickener and additives in the base oil to form a rock bit grease, and an effective amount of polarized graphite.
