A method for extracting text from images whereby the intensity of each color plane of the image is identified, the color plane with the highest intensity is converted into a black and white image, and character recognition is performed on the black and white image to determine the text of the image. The method can be used for textual word searches for Graphics Image Format (GIF) images as well as Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) images, thereby providing the capability to perform text searches for images found on web pages of the World Wide Web.

Method of extracting text from graphical images

A method of run-length encoding an image containing runs of white pixels and black pixels, by acquiring the image to encode; determining the length of all unique pixel run-lengths contained within the image on a line-by-line basis, irrespective of pixel color; selecting a base of a numeral system, where the base is made up of digits; generating a number of unequal-length codewords equal to the base; determining, in order, pixel run-lengths, on a line-by-line basis, for each pixel run-length contained in the image, where counting on each line starts with a particular pixel color; representing each pixel run-length determined in the last step in the numeral system of the base; determining the frequency of occurrence of each digit resulting from the last step; assigning the unequal-length codewords, according to ascending length of the unequal-length codewords, to the digits according to descending order of frequency of occurrence of the digits; and encoding the image by replacing each pixel run-length in the image represented in digit form with the corresponding unequal-length codeword.

The present invention discloses a device for and method of correcting an error in a formatted modem transmission by receiving a formatted modem transmission into a receiving modem, identifying the formatting scheme of the transmission, testing the transmission to determine if a formatting error is contained therein, generating error patterns and associated correction patterns for the receiving modem based upon the format of the transmission and the type of descrambler used in the receiving modem, searching the transmission to determine if any of the generated error patterns is found therein, and replacing any error pattern found in the transmission with its associated correction pattern.
