A magnetic test apparatus, in accordance with one embodiment, comprising a rotor coupled to a drive shaft, wherein the drive shaft is mechanically coupled to a drive system; a stator coupled to at least one brush holder; at least one brush held by the brush holder, wherein the brush is held in contact with the rotor; a housing for supporting the rotor and the stator; and a magnet for providing a magnetic field in the vicinity of the at least one brush.

Test apparatus, system, and method with a magnetic feature

The wear life of flexible copper fiber brushes when used at a positive pole in a direct current motor or generator is improved by the provision of an effective amount of zinc as a sacrificial anode material. Flame-sprayed zinc is applied as a coating to the exterior surface of such a copper fiber pack to bond the fibers with a surrounding metal wire reinforcing wrap, of cross wound copper wire or fine mesh, woven copper wire screen material, and create an improved brush.

Homopolar machine with brush improvement

A homopolar machine which exhibits reduced wear and prolonged brush life. Current collectors or brushes are mounted so as to maintain substantially constant contact pressure and so that all of them are polarized negative. Brush holders are provided which facilitate the application of precise and constant contact pressure in a region of very high magnetic forces.

A demountable thermal coupling for engaging a refrigeration unit with a cryogenic device includes a collet assembly which is slidingly mounted against a retainer ring in the passageway of a sleeve assembly. When the refrigeration unit is engaged with the sleeve assembly, the collet assembly closes onto a cooling probe of the refrigeration unit to establish a thermal contact between the cooling probe and the collet assembly. An interconnect between the collet and the superconducting device then allows the cooling probe to cool the superconducting device. Withdrawal of the cooling probe from the collet disengages the refrigeration unit from the superconducting device.
