An automated external defibrillator (AED)has a changeable language placard () which enables the AED to instruct the user in one or more languages. The placard includes a controlling element () which is sensed by the AED, and causes the AED to automatically switch the language mode into the corresponding placard language. The placard also includes visual guidance instructions ().

A language controller () is described which can be installed on the front face of an automated external defibrillator (AED) in order to establish the language of the AED user interface. The language controller is in the form of a labeled plaque () which informs the user which language is currently in use. The plaque may also contain a button () which enables toggling from one language to another. Memory may also reside in the plaque to provide language data to the AED.

Handling or removal of a pair of pre-connected defibrillator electrode pads from their package, or a compartment in the defibrillator, is detected in order to effectively time the issuance of prompts to guide the user. Detection occurs when an impedance level between the electrode pads varies sufficiently over time to indicate occurrence of the handling or removal event. The pads are preferably configured to leverage variability in the impedance that results from bending of pads during handling or removal.

A data card drawer for installing a data card, such as a compact flash card, into a device that uses data cards. Devices that use data cards include, for example, medical devices, and more particularly defibrillators. The data card drawer electrically isolates the data card from the user when the user is installing or removing the data card from the device. The data card drawer may also be formed to provide a closure to the opening in the device housing provided to receive the data card. Further, the data card drawer may be formed to prevent damaging pins located on a pin connector within the receiving device which communicate data with the data card. The data card drawer preferably mates with the device to prevent ingress and egress of foreign matter and moisture.

A self-balancing apparatus for a centrifuge is disclosed which employs two arcuately movable counterweights. The centrifuge has a plurality of receptacles for receiving one or more assay cartridges. Control apparatus in the centrifuge determines the location and number of received cartridges. Desired counterweight positions are then calculated which will substantially balance the centrifuge. The counterweights are moved into these positions prior to the centrifuge being operated at high speeds.
