A process for de-watering lime mud in a Krafft pulping process is described. The process includes an improvement which comprises adding an effective water-removal rate enhancing amount of an alkyleneamine to the lime mud prior to filtration. The preferred alkyleneamine is ethyleneamine, that is, an amine having at least one &mdash;(CR2&mdash;CR2&mdash;NH&mdash;)&mdash; unit wherein each R is independently is H or an alkyl (straight-chain, branched, or cyclic) group of from about 1 to about 10 carbon atoms. Ethyleneamines include ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenediamine, triethylenetetramine, tetraethylenepentamine, piperazine, aminoethylpiperazine, and ethyleneamine mixtures such as mixtures of ethyleneamine oligomers having an average molecular weight of about 200-500.

Ethyleneamine compound(s), or mixtures thereof, are used in effective amounts to reduce or inhibit the deposition of white pitch on the paper making equipment during the processing to recycle coated paper.

A process for dewatering lime mud in a kraft pulping process is described. Use of alkyleneamines for enhancing lime mud dewatering

Ethyleneamines are used in washing pulp to remove lignin. A process for washing a cellulose pulp mixture containing lignin to remove at least a portion of the lignin therefrom comprises use of a washing composition with at least about 100 ppm of an ethyleneamine. The process includes an improvement in a washing process a cellulose pulp mixture containing lignin wherein a washing composition is used to remove at least a portion of the lignin, the improvement comprising use of at least about 100 ppm of an ethyleneamine with the washing composition and/or using an amount of ethyleneamine at least equivalent to about 100 ppm based on the washing composition with the washing composition. The washing composition is also novel and includes a washing composition for washing kraft pulp comprising water and at least about 100 ppm of an ethyleneamine.

The drying rate of glazes containing water used to coat ceramic articles is increased by addition of aminoethylethanolamine, one or more polyalkylene polyamines with or without a small amount of a styrene-butadiene latex.

Non-whiteware ceramic articles having an increased green strength are prepared from slip compositions containing a polyalkylene polyamine as an additive or a mixture of a polyalkylene polyamine and binder as an additive. A casting process for the preparation of whiteware ceramic articles employs a polyalkylene polyamine, such as tetraethylene pentamine, as an additive to increase the casting rate. The additive can be employed, e.g., in slip casting, vacuum casting and pressure casting. Optionally, the addtive includes a binder such as a styrene butadiene latex in an amount effective to maintain the green strength of the articles prepared in the casting process.

Casting process

This invention relates to a new composition of matter known as 2-Methyl-4-benzyl-5-oxazolidinone and a method of preparation of the new composition comprising combining ethyl acetate and the azlactone of .alpha.-acetoaminocinnamic acid in the presence of a catalyst such as W-2 Raney nickel. By using the new composition of matter of this invention the synthesis of L-phenylalanine is shortened to fewer reactions and process steps from the current lengthy, multistep means of synthesis.
