Detecting the source of a defect in a cable may be difficult, in part because present systems may be configured to wind and unwind the cable on many different spools, capstans or other transport equipment. Provided are systems and methods in which a laser speed gauge is used to measure the rotation of a cable assembly component and determine any abnormalities in the rotation (e.g., vibrations, periodic increases/decreases in speed). An example method includes receiving, by a computing device and from a laser speed gauge, a first reading of a rotating cable assembly component. The computing device may covert the first reading of the rotating cable assembly component to a frequency analysis of the rotating cable assembly component and determine based on the frequency analysis of the rotating cable assembly component, a structural defect in a cable caused by the rotating cable assembly component.

Methods and systems for analyzing cable return loss

A stripline RF transmission cable has a flat inner conductor surrounded by a dielectric layer that is surrounded by an outer conductor. A jacket with an attachment feature surrounds the outer conductor. The attachment feature may be a fin aligned parallel or normal to the inner conductor. The attachment feature may be continuous or periodic along a longitudinal extent of the cable. The attachment feature may include male and female portions dimensioned to couple with one another, enabling adjacent cables to be attached to one another.

Self-supporting stripline RF transmission cable

A stripline RF transmission cable has a generally planar inner conductor surrounded by a dielectric layer that is surrounded by a corrugated outer conductor. The corrugations may be, for example, annular or helical. The outer conductor has a top section and a bottom section which transition to a pair of edge sections that interconnect the top section with the bottom section. The top section, bottom section and the inner conductor may be provided with generally equal widths. A spacing between the inner conductor and the dielectric layer may be reduced proximate a mid section of the inner conductor. The inner conductor may also be corrugated generally normal to a longitudinal extend of the inner conductor.

A method for making a coaxial cable including an inner conductor, an outer conductor, and a dielectric material layer therebetween may include forming the inner conductor by at least forming a bimetallic strip into a tubular bimetallic layer having a pair of longitudinal edge portions at a longitudinal seam. The bimetallic strip may include an inner metal layer and an outer metal layer bonded thereto and coextensive therewith. Each of the longitudinal edge portions may be folded over. The method may also include forming a welded joint between adjacent portions of the folded over longitudinal edge portions and defining surplus material at the welded joint. The method may further include removing the surplus material at the welded joint and forming the dielectric material layer surrounding the inner conductor. The method may also include forming the outer conductor surrounding the dielectric material layer.

Coaxial cable including tubular bimetallic inner layer with folded edge portions and associated methods

The present invention is a flexible low loss coaxial cable comprising a cylindrical plastic rod, an inner conductor surrounding the plastic rod, a dielectric layer surrounding the inner conductor, and a tubular metallic sheath closely surrounding the dielectric layer. The coaxial cable can further include a protective polymer jacket surrounding the sheath. The cylindrical plastic rod supports the inner conductor in bending and can be formed around a central structural member. The present invention also includes a method of making flexible coaxial cable.

Coaxial cable and method of making same

The communications system transmits both communications signals and electrical power to a plurality of subscribers. The communications signals can include video, voice and data signals. The communications system includes a coaxial drop cable for transmitting both the communications signals and electrical power from a cable tap to at least one subscriber of the communications system. The coaxial drop cable includes an annular outer conductor surrounding the dielectric material and having a mechanically and electrically continuous, non-overlapping tubular metallic shield. The coaxial drop cable has predetermined signal transmission characteristics, including enhanced shielding properties, which are maintained while the coaxial drop cable is flexed due, at least in part, to an increase in the stiffness of the dielectric material relative to the outer conductor. In particular, the dielectric material has a predetermined compressive stiffness of at least 1000 pounds per linear inch while the outer diameter of the outer conductor is less than about 0.04 inches. In addition, the outer conductor typically has a predetermined thickness which is at least 2.5% of the outer diameter of the outer conductor. Accordingly, the coaxial drop cable effectively transmits both communications signals and electrical power while providing enhanced shielding and relatively low electrical resistance and attenuation.

Coaxial drop cable having a mechanically and electronically continuous outer conductor and an associated communications system

A method of making a flexible coaxial cable is provided. The method comprises advancing a cable core comprising a conductor and an expanded foam dielectric surrounding the conductor along a predetermined path of travel, directing an elongate strip of copper onto the advancing cable core and bending the copper strip into a generally cylindrical form so as to loosely encircle the core. Opposing longitudinal edges of the thus formed copper strip are then moved into abutting relation and a longitudinal weld is formed joining the abutting edges to thereby form an electrically and mechanically continuous tubular copper sheath loosely surrounding the cable core. The cable core and the surrounding sheath are simultaneously advanced while the tubular sheath is deformed into an oval configuration loosely surrounding the core. The longitudinal weld of the advancing sheath is then directed against a scarfing blade and weld flash from the sheath is scarfed from the sheath. The advancing copper sheath is sunk onto the advancing cable core to form the coaxial cable. A polymer composition may be extruded around the copper sheath to form a protective jacket surrounding the coaxial cable and may be bonded thereto. The present invention also includes a flexible coaxial cable having excellent electrical and bending properties.
