Compositions of a mixture of a thiol material and a material that contains a reactive unsaturated carbon-carbon bond that can be polymerized to form a charge-transporting or luminescent film are described, as is an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device comprising at least one such charge-transporting or emissive layer that has been formed by polymerizing a thiol material and an ene material. The process for forming such an OLED, including the deposition of a layer of material comprising the polymerizable composition, from solution, exposing said layer to actinic radiation through a mask, and then optionally developing said film to form a photopatterned film, is also disclosed.

A detector apparatus and method for detecting radiation emitted from a target comprising: a first transmissive polarizer () for polarizing radiation incident on the target; a second transmissive polarizer () for polarizing the radiation emitted from the target () and absorbing any remaining light polarized by the first polarizer; and at least one reflective polarizer () arranged between the first and second transmissive polarizers.

A display arrangement comprises an image intensifier tube or some other device which provides a representation of a viewed scene at an input. A supertwist LCD and associated polarizers and are located between the input and a viewer. A ferroelectric liquid crystal shutter is located between the LCD and second polarizer and is controlled to produce symbology. By switching the shutter the polarization of the incident radiation is switched between two states differing by 90.degree.. This causes the LCD to operate in two states. In one state the viewed scene is transmitted through the LCD and in the other state it is absorbed and any symbology on the LCD is contrasted with a dark absorbing background. The shutter is switched sufficiently quickly that the viewer perceives the symbology overlaid on the viewed scene. In another arrangement, lens means having focusing properties which are dependent on the incident polarization is included to allow switching between different display modes.

In a method of driving a ferroelectric liquid crystal display, a blanking pulse of width 2t.sub.s followed, after a delay of n.multidot.t.sub.s (where n is an integer), by a writing pulse of width t.sub.s and of opposite polarity to the blanking pulse are applied to successive row address lines at intervals of 2t.sub.s. Pairs of bipolar data pulses of width t.sub.s are applied to column address lines so that the data pulses coincide with the blanking pulse applied to the ith row and the writing pulse applied to row i-(n+1)/2 for odd values of n and to row 1-(n+2)/2 for even values of n. The data pulse amplitude may be varied in order to obtain variable grey levels in the display.

Ferroelectric liquid crystal devices

In a method of driving liquid crystal cells in an active matrix addressed display of the resistively-coupled transistor type whereby interlacing of alternate rows of pixels is achieved, rows N-1, N+1, N+3, - - - of the cells are addressed in sequence in a first field period by applying transistor turn-on pulses to the associated row address lines while reference signals are applied to the row address lines associated with rows, N, N+2, N+4, - - - in sequence, the turn-on pulse for the row N-1 and the reference signal for the row N being coincident. During a second field period of the transistor turn-on pulses are applied to the address lines for rows N, N+2, N+4, - - - while reference signals are applied to the address lines for rows N-1, N+3, N+5, - - - the turn-on pulse for the row N and the reference signal for the row N+1 being coincident. The reference signal may be of two different magnitudes which alternate at the line rate or at the frame rate of a television video signal.

Liquid crystal display

A device for indicating whether a rise in temperature above a predetermined value has occurred includes a support member, such as a label, on which a temperature-sensitive material is deposited. The material includes a large number of fracturable microcapsules containing a medium which changes from a solid state to a liquid state at the predetermined temperature value. The viscosity of the medium in its liquid state and the material of the support member are chosen such that the distance d.sub.1 by which the medium flows across the support member after the fracturing of the microcapsules so as to activate the device is indicative of the time between activation of the device and cooling of the device to below the predetermined temperature value. If the temperature is subsequently allowed to rise above the predetermined value, the medium will again assume its liquid state and will flow further across the support member, reaching a distance of, say, d.sub.2, thus indicating that the rise in temperature has occurred. The material may be printed on the label as a bar code, so that any rise above the predetermined temperature level will be indicated by distortion of the bar code which renders it unreadable.

Liquid crystal displays and fluorescent dyes for use therein

A liquid crystal device comprises a ferroelectric smectic phase liquid crystal enclosed between two surfaces, the surfaces being such that the directors of the liquid crystal adjacent the surfaces are not parallel to the surfaces. The directors adjacent one of the surfaces are not parallel to the directors adjacent the other surface, the liquid crystal cone angle being equal to half the angle between a pair of directors each adjacent a different one of the surfaces.
