Photovoltaic materials and methods of photovoltaic cell fabrication provide a photovoltaic cell in the form of a fiber. These fibers may be formed into a flexible fabric or textile.

The modules can include: a first photovoltaic cell including an electrode; a second photovoltaic cell including an electrode; and an interconnect that connects the electrodes of first and second photovoltaic cells. The interconnect can include: an electrically insulative material adhesive material; and a mesh partially disposed in the adhesive material.

Photovoltaic module architecture

Photovoltaic modules, as well as related systems, methods and components are disclosed. In some embodiments, a photovoltaic module can include a first photovoltaic cell including an electrode, a second photovoltaic cell including an electrode, and an interconnect. The electrode of the first photovoltaic cell can overlap the electrode of the second photovoltaic cell. The interconnect can electrically connect the electrode of the first photovoltaic cell and the electrode of the second photovoltaic cell. The interconnect can mechanically couple the first and second photovoltaic cells.

A flexible photovoltaically powered display, which may be utilized in a wide variety of display contexts including retail shelf systems, is described. The photovoltaic cell is preferably activated by ambient light (e.g., fluorescent or incandescent).

Displays with integrated photovoltaic cells

In one aspect, the invention provides photovoltaic cells that utilize a mesh electrode on at least one exposure side of the photovoltaic cell. Preferably, the mesh electrode is a metallic mesh. In one embodiment, the invention provides dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) having a wire mesh exposure side electrode and a photovoltaic material comprising a photosensitized interconnected nanoparticle layer. In one embodiment, the wire mesh electrode functions as the cathode of the DSSC. In another embodiment, the wire mesh electrode functions as the anode of the DSSC. In addition, embodiments are provided where wire mesh electrodes are used for the anode and the cathode of a DSSC.

The invention, in one embodiment, is directed to various aspects of the use of one or more wires in conjunction with an adhesive strip to serve as an electrically conductive connector between the photoactive layers of a photovoltaic cell or module.
