A method for improving wear control, while maintaining or improving solubility and fuel efficiency, in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and at least one metal salt of a carboxylic acid, as a minor component; wherein the metal salt of the carboxylic acid contains no sulfur or phosphorus; wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of palladium (Pd), silver (Ag), gold (Au), zinc (Zn), and mixtures thereof; wherein the carboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, a cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid, and mixtures thereof; wherein the molar ratio of (zinc+palladium+silver+gold)/phosphorus of said formulated oil is greater than 1.0. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

Thermocleavable friction modifiers and methods thereof

For a monitored corrosion sensor, such as a sensor based on one or more mechanical oscillators disposed in a fluid flow, one or more values are measured over time. The values can be measured at a desired frequency, such as a once per second, once per minute, or another convenient frequency. The measured data can then be analyzed as a time series. The goal of the analysis is to identify variations in the time series data that are sufficiently unexpected relative to the prior behavior of the time series within a given time window. The identified variations can then, for example, be excluded from consideration when determining a corrosion-related value for the sensor.

Detection of corrosion rates in processing pipes and vessels

A system for in-situ identification of a working fluid disposed in at least one piece of equipment, the system including: a working fluid reservoir that contains the working fluid; an in-situ sensor disposed in the working fluid reservoir such that it detects properties of the working fluid or computes properties from the generated spectra of the working fluid; a transmitter that transmits the detected spectra of the working fluid and equipment identification information; and a cloud computing system that receives the detected spectra and the equipment identification information transmitted from the transmitter, wherein the cloud computing system compares the spectra and equipment identification information against a reference database to determine whether or not the spectra of the working fluid substantially matches the stored reference spectra associated with the expected or specified fluid for the equipment.

Method and system for in-situ identification of working fluids

A method for improving wear control in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and encapsulated boron-containing microscale particles, as a minor component. The minor component preferably contains no metal or sulfur, and preferably no phosphorus. The encapsulated boron-containing microscale particles include an encapsulating material and a boron-containing compound encapsulated by the encapsulating material. The boron-containing compound is a boron oxide, a boric acid, or mixtures thereof. The encapsulating material is a carboxylic acid selected from an aliphatic carboxylic acid, a cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid, and mixtures thereof. A method for improving wear control in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and encapsulated microscale particles, as a minor component. The minor component contains no sulfur or phosphorus. The encapsulated microscale particles include an encapsulating material and a core material encapsulated by the encapsulating material. The core material includes at least one metal salt selected from a metal oxide, metal hydroxide, metal carbonate, or mixtures thereof. The encapsulating material is derived from a carboxylic acid selected from an aliphatic carboxylic acid, a cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid, and mixtures thereof. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

A method for improving wear control in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition that includes a lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and at least one phosphazene represented by the formula as a minor component. A lubricating oil having a composition that includes a lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and at least one phosphazene represented by the above formula as a minor component. The lubricating oil is useful in internal combustion engines.

Lubricating oil compositions with engine wear protection and solubility

A method for determining and identifying corrosion protective layers that provide corrosion protection against crude oils and crude oil fractions is disclosed. The method identifies naturally occurring constituents in crude oils that indirectly provide corrosion protection. A method assessing the potential of these constituents is also disclosed. The method includes exposing metal coupons with the crude oil or crude fraction of interest at the expected operating temperature of concern. The corrosion potential assessment further analyzes the exposed coupons with transmission electron microscopy and an additional high temperature exposure that challenges the tenacity of the protection offered by the corrosion protective layer.

Method for identifying layers providing corrosion protection in crude oil fractions

Mechanical oscillators employ the use of resonance parameters, frequency and the quality factor Q, for the measurement of corrosion or deposition. The ability of a mechanical oscillator to measure small amounts of metal loss or deposition is not only dependent upon the mechanical design but is limited by the precision in determining the resonance frequency and Q. Methods for measuring these resonance parameters with a high precision in the presence of noise are provided. The increased degree of precision improves the utility of these devices as sensitive probes for corrosion and deposition (fouling) measurement. The increased degree of precision is enabled in part by employing curve fitting consistent with modeling the mechanical oscillator as a simple harmonic oscillator. This curve fitting procedure, combined with averaging and utilizing signal processing parameters to mitigate noise effects, adds precision in measuring resonance parameters.

Determining the resonance parameters for mechanical oscillators

This invention relates to a microcantilever stress sensor for detecting and quantifying low levels of contaminants in liquids and gases. The invention uses a chemical agent to impart chemical specificity to the microcantilever stress sensor. The microcantilever deflects when the chemical agent is replaced by a more strongly adsorbing chemical species. The magnitude of the deflection is then used as a measure of the quantity of contaminant present.

The present invention provides systems and methods for determining the viscosity of a lubricating fluid in a process on line. The method of the present invention obviates the need to accurately control the temperature of the lubricating fluid in the system when taking fluid viscosity measurements.

On-line absolute viscosity measurement system

The present invention relates to a method of dispensing accurately small amounts of high viscosity lubricant components using tubeless positive-displacement liquid-handling equipment for forming lubricant blends. The method includes the steps of: providing a low void volume positive displacement pipette with a tapered tip for each lubricant component contained within a lubricant additive reservoir, and one or more lubricant blend containers; ingesting into a low void volume positive displacement pipette from a lubricant additive reservoir an ingestion volume of a lubricant component; moving the low void volume positive displacement pipette from the lubricant additive reservoir to the one or more lubricant blend containers; ejecting into the one or more lubricant blend containers an ejection volume of the lubricant component from the low void volume positive displacement pipette; returning the low void volume positive displacement pipette from the one or more lubricant blend containers to the additive reservoir; and repeating these steps for each additional lubricant component. The advantages of the method of the present invention include improved dispensing accuracy, quicker dispensing, lower shear rate during dispensing, lower temperature for dispensing, less residual additive on the tip of the device after dispensing, and the ability to real time monitor density and mass during dispensing. The method finds application in laboratory test environments, and in particular in high throughput testing environments.

Method of blending lubricants using positive displacement liquid-handling equipment

This invention is a fuel composition having a sulphur content of &#x2266;50 ppm by weight and comprising &#x2267;50 ppm by weight of at least one fused polycyclic aromatic compound which has at least one hetero-atom selected from O and N either (a) as a heterocyclic group, or, (b) as an exocyclic group in which the hetero-atom is attached either directly or through one other carbon atom to a ring carbon atom wherein the fused polycyclic aromatic compound is substituted on at least one of its ring carbon atoms by a C1-C4 alkyl group. These compounds are capable of improving the antiwear and lubricity properties of a low sulphur fuels, especially diesel fuels, when compared with the performance of the same fuel in the absence of such compounds.

Oil aging and particulate building in a lubricant other than one exposed to combustion products is monitored by detecting light transmitted through the lubricant at least one, and preferably, two or more preselected wavelengths over a pathlength greater than about 0.5 cm wherein one wavelength is in the near infra-red spectrum and/or one wavelength is in the visible or near infra-red spectrum. The detected light when compared to predetermined values provides an indication of the condition of the lubricant.
