Programmable cartridge telephone communication system

A line circuit is disclosed for controlling communications over a communication pair between a switching machine and a key telephone station. The line circuit includes a dual sensitivity shunt detector arrangement (103, 104, 105) for improved detection of dc transients and ac ringing voltage signals appearing across the pair. A current diverter circuit (104) switches the sensitivity of the shunt detector arrangement depending on the operating state of the key telephone station.

Key telephone line shunt detector circuit

There is disclosed a line circuit for establishing a hold condition on a communication line, extending between a switching machine and a key telephone station, during an open switching interval (OSI) when no current flows on the communication line. The control signal required to enable the hold circuit is arranged to be time dependent. For a fixed time interval, which bridges the OSI period, after the telephone station answers a ringing line a hold condition is enabled (402) exclusively by a control signal on the A lead from the station. This time dependent hold enable arrangement permits a hold capability during an OSI condition. After this time interval elapses (403) a hold condition is enabled by (404) a joint signal condition on the A lead and a current continuity condition on the communication line.

Key telephone hold arrangement

There is disclosed a protective coupler for use with key telephone line units (KTU) to provide isolation between the terminal equipment and the central office line. The protective coupler plugs onto the KTU option socket and establishes a dielectric barrier to protect the system from possible overvoltages, guarantees a balanced termination, and meets leakage requirements while remaining operable to pass control and voice signals between the network and station equipment. The central office side of the barrier contains a current sink for control purposes as well as a gain compensation circuit to adjust for varying distances from the central office.

Telephone terminal equipments connected to the network through the device described herein are prevented from applying potentially human-hazardous voltages or currents to the network. The device includes a pair of bifilar relay coils, one in each connection to the central office. These operate an associated relay contact only when an unbalanced voltage or current condition occurs on the customer leads. A circuit path is thus completed to operate a second relay, which opens the connection between the customer terminal leads and the network leads; and establishes a path to ground through its own coils for the current from the unbalanced source. Means are included for assuring that the fraction of hazardous voltage appearing across the second relay remains essentially constant in the frequency range of 17 to 60 hertz. Only removal of the unbalanced current can release the relay and restore the network connection.

Alternate lines of a 526 line video signal are time-stretched and transmitted over a transmission channel of limited bandwidth. At the receiver, the lines are compressed back to their original duration and displayed in an interlaced manner on a conventional receiver by blanking alternate lines in each field. In another embodiment of the invention, adjacent transmitted lines of the video signal are averaged at the receiver and the resultant signals are substituted for the non-transmitted lines of the video signal.
