A disk drive is provided with an enclosure and a disk mounted for rotation within the enclosure. The disk drive is also provided with a head mounted for rotation within the enclosure and adapted to engage the disk, a housing defining a cavity extending along an axis within the enclosure, and a shaft received within the cavity, mounted for rotation about the axis and coupled to one of the disk and the head. The disk drive is also provided with a bearing and a bearing seat. The bearing is formed generally spherical, oriented in a non-rolling configuration along the axis, and secured to one of the housing and the shaft. The bearing seat has a surface secured to the other of the housing and the shaft and biased to engage the bearing, wherein at least one of the bearing and the surface includes a low-friction coating formed thereon.

An apparatus including a sterilizable tray having a base and at least one fixture connected to the tray adapted for removably securing an implant insertion device to the tray. The tray can be free of a first wall portion for permitting the proximal end of an implantable device to axially align with the end of the implant insertion device for coupling to the implant insertion device and can be free of a second wall portion for permitting a tool to axially align with the end of the implant insertion device so as to threadedly couple the implant insertion device to the implantable device. Related methods and apparatus are provided.

A wheeled ambulatory aid for mobility and training which is advanced via bodily contact. Reciprocating UE movement is enabled and reciprocating gait patterns can be performed. The patient mobility aid includes a frame, and at least first and second wheels operatively secured to and supporting the frame for selective rolling movement. First and second support assemblies are located on first and second sides of the frame, respectively. A reverse motion linkage operatively associated with the first and second support assemblies, the reverse motion linkage including a first state configured to provide independent between the first and second support assemblies, and a second state configured to provide interrelated movement between the first and second support assemblies to create symmetrical out of phase reciprocating UE movement. Support assemblies can variably be statically positioned.

An implant insertion device including a body having a first portion for coupling to a proximal end of an intramedullary rod and a second portion extending in a spaced position from the intramedullary rod in the vicinity of an aperture in a proximal end of the rod when the rod is coupled to the first portion. The second portion can include a targeting assembly having a passageway for receiving a guide sleeve and for pivoting the guide sleeve relative to the aperture through an angular range for inserting the fastener into the aperture of the rod. An implant insertion device for use with an implantable device is additionally provided.

A system and method are provided for sealing a fluid dynamic bearing motor. A first and a second folded fluid channel are shaped for maximizing bearing axial span and establishing angular stiffness, to resist gyroscopic rocking of the facing bearing surfaces. The first folded fluid channel is limited to occupying at least a portion of the same axial space as the bearing. A first and a second fluid sealing system are connected to opposite axial ends of the bearing. The first fluid sealing system forms an active pumping seal to pump fluid during motor rotation. In an aspect, a top cover attached shaft, and a single thrust surface are employed, allowing for a rigid motor structure and power reduction in applications including high rotational speed disc drives. Also, by employing a rigid shaft design, significantly lower amplitude radial vibration responses are exhibited at higher frequencies than prior art motor designs.

Provided herein is a motor including a plastic component; a stationary component having a thrustplate; and a rotatable component having a sleeve and a counterplate, wherein the plastic component is positioned outside the sleeve, and wherein the thrustplate and the counterplate are positioned to form a fluid dynamic bearing ('FDB') at a top portion of the sleeve. Also provided is a motor comprising a plastic component; a stationary component comprising a thrustplate; and a rotatable component comprising a sleeve; wherein the plastic component is affixed to the sleeve, and wherein the thrustplate and the plastic component are positioned to form a FDB. Also provided is a motor comprising a plastic component; a stationary component comprising an inner component; and a rotatable component comprising the plastic component and a supporting means for supporting the inner component, wherein the inner component and the supporting means are positioned to form a FDB.

A motor includes a rotatable component rotatable relative to a stationary component, a fluid operable to flow between the rotatable and stationary component, and a capillary sealing component. The capillary sealing component provides a capillary seal and includes at least one tapered slot configured to pump the fluid between the rotatable and stationary components.

An apparatus and method are provided for adjusting torque and speed of a motor, while remaining within the voltage limit of a power supply. The invention provides a brushless direct current motor with independently driven and switchable stators. In an aspect, each stator and the rotor is structured to function as an independent motor separate from another stator and the rotor. A first power electronics directs energy to a first stator, and a second power electronics directs energy to a second stator. A rotor rotates relative to the stators. In an aspect, a commutation electronics determines electrical position of the rotor relative to the stators, and synchronizes current pulses directed to a sequentially selected phase of the stators, to generate a rotating magnetic field that communicates with the rotor. A controller sets the connection of the first power electronics in series or in parallel with the second power electronics.

Direct current motor with independently driven and switchable stators

A fluid dynamic bearing motor and method are described, wherein motor components, including complex shaped motor components, are molded of plastic. The molding ensures form control and dimensional control thereby accomplishing design requirements, and eliminating or reducing component costs and component machining. The mold can be shaped to form various motor geometries, thereby eliminating the need for multiple component assembly and related assembly costs. In an aspect, a plastic integral motor hub is formed by injection molding. Alternatively, a plastic motor hub is affixed to a metal sleeve. In another aspect, fluid containment structures are molded into the motor component, reducing the number of components as compared with machined metal components. In a further aspect, bearing structures such as grooves are molded into the motor component, thereby eliminating processes such as electrochemical machining. In yet a further aspect, a plastic hub faces a thrustplate, reducing expensive sleeve machining.

A robust spindle motor is provided having improved shock resistance for fluid containment, as well as enhanced air purging characteristics. In an aspect, axial displacement of relatively rotating components is restricted by utilizing a limiter situated adjacent to a limiter bushing forming an axial limiter gap therebetween. A fluid channel, at least partially diverging, extends from a hydrodynamic bearing to the axial limiter gap, and continues to a region beyond the axial limiter gap. In an aspect, an axially diverging slot is situated adjacent to the axial limiter gap. Power is reduced by reducing viscous drag between relatively rotating components, hydrodynamic bearing length is increased, and higher stiffness of the hydrodynamic bearing is provided. Fluid volume may be increased, thereby offsetting fluid evaporation losses and allowing for the use of lower viscosity lubricants.

Air purging for a fluid dynamic bearing

A fluid dynamic bearing formed by a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) wafer-level batch-fabrication process is provided. The process results in a high performance and high reliability fluid dynamic bearing having features including higher bearing lifetime at high RPM, improved bearing stiffness, durability and thrust/restoring forces capabilities. The present invention is especially useful with small form factor disc drive memory devices having constraints in motor height, such as a 2.5 inch disc drive, requiring high performance including high rotational speed and large areal density. A sacrificial layer is utilized in the process to simultaneously form symmetrical facing surfaces of relatively rotatable components. The facing surfaces define, therebetween, a desired feature, such as a journal bearing, a thrust bearing, a fluid channel, a fluid reservoir, a capillary seal, pressure generating grooves, and other profile geometries. Such geometry control allows for design freedom in obtaining a desired bearing performance and stiffness.

Methods of machining a single piece hub with integral upper and lower female cones includes providing a single piece hub with upper and lower conical voids having respective narrow ends proximal each other and respective wide ends distal each other. Surfaces of the voids are machined using a tool provided from a single side of the hub that is dimensioned to fit through an opening defined by the interface between the narrow ends of the conical void. The tool can be moved parallel to a rotational axis for accessing conical surfaces of both voids and perpendicular to the rotational axis while contacting the surfaces so as to produce a final machined surface.
