The method comprises the steps of: (i) applying to a first substrate comprising a grooved substantially flat surface a moisture curable alkoxy-functional RTV composition; (ii) positioning the grooved substantially flat surface in occluding proximity with a substantially flat surface of a second substrate, so the alkoxy-functional RTV composition effects a seal therebetween; (iii) exposing the alkoxy-functional RTV composition to a detrimental temperature; and (iv) curing the alkoxy-functional RTV composition.

A process for improving the adhesion of aqueous silicone elastomeric materials to porous masonry substrates consists essentially of first coating the substrate with an aqueous silicone emulsion which provides an elastomeric coating upon removal of the water, the emulsion having a viscosity of from 0.1 to 10 Pa.s at 25.degree. C. and a pH of from 7 to 11.5 inclusive. After the first coating is dried to form a film, a second aqueous silicone emulsion which provides an elastomeric material upon removal of the water is applied. The second aqueous silicone emulsion has a solids content of greater than 15 percent by weight and a viscosity of greater than 10 Pa.s at 25.degree. C. The second silicone emulsion is then allowed to dry, forming an elastomer firmly adhered to the substrate. The elastomer can be in the form of a coating to give protection to the substrate from the effects of water, pollution, or sunlight; or can be in the form of a sealant to seal spaces between masonry pieces.

Method of protecting porous masonry

A method of reducing the volatility and decreasing the evaporation loss of water repellent compositions containing a solution of an alkylalkoxysilane and a carrier prior to application of the composition to a porous substrate by acidifying the solution in order to cause rapid equilibriation of the alkylalkoxysilane and the carrier to a constant steady state condition, adding to the acidified hydrolyzed alkylalkoxsilane solution at least one metal salt catalyst to further increase the hydrolysis rate of the alkylalkoxysilane and to complete the hydrolysis and the condensation of the alkylalkoxysilane, adding at least one surface depositing agent to the acidified hydrolyzed alkylalkoxysilane solution in order to reduce evaporation of un-reacted alkylalkoxysilane, and maintaining the solution in a substantially anhydrous condition, so that the amount of hydrolyzed silane absorbed by the porous substrate and the percentage of water excluded from the porous substrate by the repellent composition are increased.

Low volatility water repellents

A method of constructing a weatherproof coating over a roof comprises laying a piece or pieces of cloth over a roof, bonding the pieces of cloth together at any seams, adhering the cloth to the roof surface at least at the edges and projections, then coating the cloth with a liquid elastomeric silicone composition. The composition cures under ambient conditions to yield a water impermeable membrane that has been manufactured in place. A preferred embodiment uses unimpregnated, non-woven thermoplastic cloth having an upper surface thermally treated to remove projecting fibers, the thermally treated surface being subsequently wash coated with a layer of liquid elastomeric silicone emulsion except for any surface of the cloth edges which will be subsequently bonded at any seams, the wash coating being cured before application of the coated cloth to the roof.

Silicone elastomer based roofing system

This invention describes a method of producing a silicone elastomer from an emulsion. When the ingredients are mixed together, the resulting latex can be used immediately. Removing the water from the latex results in a silicone elastomer. The method combines (A) an anionically stabilized, hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane, present as an emulsion of dispersed particles in water, the emulsion having a pH of greater than 9, (B) dialkyltindicarboxylate, (C) alkylorthosilicate, (D) colloidal silica, and optionally (E) water, admixing (A) and (B) only in the presence of (C) to produce a dispersion of the ingredients in water. The ingredients can be distributed into a two-part system for storage. One embodiment includes fibers, lauryl alcohol, or a mixture of both in the emulsion; then forms an open-cell, elastomeric foam by forming a froth from the emulsion and removing the water from the froth.

Method of producing a silicone water-based elastomer

The shelf life of an aqueous, anionic silicone emulsion, which contains an organic tin compound and which forms an elastomer upon removal of the water, is improved by the addition of an additive. The additive is selected from the group consisting of alkyl mercaptan, 8-quinolinol, thioglycolic acid, and salts of thioglycolic acid. Elastomers produced by removing the water from these emulsions, once shelf aged, have more consistent physical properties than do elastomers produced from similar emulsions not containing the additives.

Silicone water-based emulsions having improved shelf life

A silicone caulking material obtained by mixing an anionically stabilized, hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane in an aqueous emulsion, dialkyltindicarboxylate, alkylorthosilicate, and inert, non-siliceous filler is capable of yielding an elastomer upon removal of the water immediately upon mixing of the ingredients. When the caulking material also contains 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, the emulsion also has a useful shelf life in that the emulsion shows no gelation upon aging. The physical properties of the elastomer produced by removing the water from the emulsion do not change appreciably during the useful life of the caulking material.

Silicone water-based elastomeric caulking material

A silicone elastomeric emulsion having improved shelf life is produced by a method which mixes the ingredients of the emulsion with the exception of a filler other than colloidal silica, then ages the mixture for at least two weeks at room temperature then adds the filler other than colloidal silica. The improved emulsion yields a film upon drying that has better physical properties. The emulsion contains an anionically stabilized, hydroxyl endblocked polydiorganosiloxane, colloidal silica, and an alkyl tin salt, as well as the filler other than colloidal silica. The emulsion has a pH of greater than 9 and a solids content of greater than 40 percent by weight. The emulsion is useful in forming a protective elastomeric coating over a substrate and as a caulking material.
