This invention discloses a multi-layer film for making pouches for containing flowable materials, said multi-layer film comprising generally five layers in order: inner sealant-layer, first interposed layer, the core layer, second interposed layer, and the outer sealant layer. The sealant and core layers are ethylene-based, whereas the interposed layers are polypropylene-based. The multi-layer film thickness is in the range of from about 35 microns to about 66 microns. The combined thickness of the first and the second interposed layers is in the range of from about 10% to about 27% of the total thickness of said multi-layer film. Similarly, a combined thickness of the inner and the outer sealant-layers is in the range of from about 10% to about 27% of the total thickness of the multi-layer film. The interposed layers comprise polypropylene that has a melt-index of less than 0.75 dg/min.

The interposed layers comprise a novel polypropylene blend with a major component polypropylene and a minor component polypropylene, wherein the minor component polypropylene is a heterogeneous polypropylene interpolymer with a density in the range of from about 0.875 to about 0.91 g/cm.

Multi-layer, ethylene polymer-based films with novel polypropylene blend-based stiffening layer

A multi-layer film for making pouches for containing flowable materials, said multi-layer film having generally five layers in order: inner sealant-layer, first interposed layer, the core layer, second interposed layer, and the outer sealant layer. All layers are ethylene-based. The combined thickness of the first and the second interposed layers is in the range of from about 10% to about 27% of the total thickness of said multi-layer film. Similarly, a combined thickness of the inner and the outer sealant-layers is in the range of from about 10% to about 27% of the total thickness of the multi-layer film. The interposed layers are of a high-density polyethylene that has a density of at least 0.950 g/cm.and a melt-index of less than 1.05 dg/min.

Multi-layer, ethylene polymer-based films with high-density polyethylene based stiffening layer

A sealant film for use in a film structure for the manufacture of pouches and bags for containing flowable materials, the sealant film comprising: (1) from about 2.0 to about 9.5 wt %, based on 100 wt % total composition, of an ethylene C-C-alpha-olefin interpolymer having a density of from 0.850 to 0.890 g/cc and a melt index of 0.3 to 5 g/10 min, the interpolymer being present in an amount that optimizes flex crack resistance as measured using a Gelbo Flex tester set up to test in accordance with ASTM F392, and minimizes reduction of thermal resistance, as measured using DSC (ASTM E794/E793) Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) which determines temperature and heat flow associated with material transitions as a function of time and temperature, and stiffness of the sealant film layer as measured using Tensile Modulus of the polyethylene films measured in accordance with ASTM Method D882; (2) from about 70.5 wt % to about 98.0 wt %, based on 100 wt % total composition, of one or more polymers selected from ethylene homopolymers and ethylene C-C-alpha-olefin interpolymers, having a density between 0.915 g/cc and 0.935 g/cc and a melt index of 0.2 to 2 g/10 min; and (3) from about 0 wt % to about 20.0 wt %, based on 100 wt % total composition, of processing additives selected from slip agents, antiblock agents, colorants and processing aids; and wherein the sealant film has a thickness of from about 2 to about 60 &#x3bc;m.

The ink formulation comprises the following components: 1) a mixing varnish comprising a phenolic-modified co-solvent-type polyamide resin, 2) a nitrocellulose compound varnish, 3) a non-aqueous solvent mixture, 4) a non-aqueous solution of a metal salt of propionic acid and 5) specialty additives, and wherein all components present in the formulation are stable in the presence of an oxidizing agent.
