The present invention discloses a structure comprising a plurality of three dimensional cells, wherein each cell comprises exterior walls defining an interior void wherein the walls comprise a plurality of struts and windows, the struts forming borders for the plurality of windows, wherein the struts have a plurality of pores. The present invention further discloses a viscoelastic foam having a ratio of elastic modulus (E') at 20&#xb0; C. to 25% compression force deflection (CFD) of 25 to 125.

Cellular structures and viscoelastic polyurethane foams

Polyurethane elastomers are formed by curing a reaction mixture containing at least one polyisocyanate at least one polyol, an aliphatic diol chain extender and a small amount of a secondary amino compound that may have none or one or more hydroxyl groups. The reaction is catalyzed with a metal catalyst. In certain embodiments, the catalyst is an organozirconium, organotitanium or tertiary amine-based catalyst. The presence of the secondary amine compound in those cases provides for a good surface appearance and good physical properties.

Polyurethane elastomers made using mixtures of aliphatic diol chain extender and secondary amine

Thermoset elastomer compositions are disclosed. Such elastomers are the reaction product of (a) an ambient temperature liquid epoxy-terminated prepolymer formed by reacting a polyoxyalkyleneamine having a molecular weight of from 3000 to 20,000 with an excess of epoxide, wherein the polyoxyalkyleneamine has at least 3 active hydrogen atoms and (b) a curing agent comprising at least one amine or polyamine having an equivalent weight of less than 200 and having 2 to 5 active hydrogen atoms. Such elastomers can be used in applications such as for sealants, adhesives, coatings, gaskets, jointing and cast elastomers.

Elastomeric epoxy materials and the use thereof

The invention provides an insulation material comprising an epoxy-terminated prepolymer and an amine curing agent. The reaction production of the epoxy-terminated prepolymer and amine curing agent provides for an elastomer that combines the processing and mechanical properties of polyurethane elastomers with improved thermal-hydrolytic stability. The insulation material is particularly useful as thermal insulation and coating for subsea oil and gas applications.

Embodiments of the present invention disclose viscoelastic foams having a renewable natural resource contents of between about 1 and about 25 wt % of the foam. The foams may have a ratio of elastic modulus (E') at 20&#xb0; C. to 25% compression force deflection (CFD) of 25 to 125.

Flexible polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate with a high equivalent weight polyol. At least a portion of the high equivalent weight polyol is a polyester containing hydroxymethyl groups. The polyester is prepared in a multi-step process from animal or vegetable fats, by recovering the constitutent fatty acids, hydroformylating carbon-carbon double bonds in the fatty acids and reducing to form hydroxymethyl groups, and then forming a polyester by reaction with an initiator compound.

Polyols useful in the manufacture of polyurethanes are disclosed. The polyols are prepared by reacting a vegetable oil based (hydroxymethyl containing) monomer with a polyol, polyamine or aminoalcohol under vacuum.

Copolyesters containing secondary hydroxyl groups are useful polyols for manufacturing polyurethanes. These can be prepared by reacting a secondary hydroxyl-containing fatty acid or ester thereof with an initiator containing hydroxyl and/or primary or secondary amino groups. A copolyester of particular interest includes a poly(ethylene oxide) segment derived from a poly(ethylene oxide) initiator.

Integrated processes of preparing industrial chemicals starting from seed oil feedstock compositions containing one or more unsaturated fatty acids or unsaturated fatty acid esters, which are essentially free of metathesis catalyst poisons, particularly hydroperoxides; metathesis of the feedstock composition with a lower olefin, such as ethylene, to form a reduced chain olefin, preferably, a reduced chain &#x3b1;-olefin, and a reduced chain unsaturated acid or ester, preferably, a reduced chain &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-unsaturated acid or ester. The reduced chain unsaturated acid or ester may be (trans)esterified to form a polyester polyolefin, which may be epoxidized to form a polyester polyepoxide. The reduced chain unsaturated acid or ester may be hydroformylated with reduction to produce an &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-hydroxy acid or &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-hydroxy ester, which may be (trans)esterified with a polyol to form an &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-polyester polyol. Alternatively, the reduced chain unsaturated acid or ester may be hydroformylated with reductive amination to produce an &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-amino acid or &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-amino ester, which may be (trans)esterified to form an &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-polyester polyamine.

Integrated chemical processes for industrial utilization of seed oils

An alcohol composition derived by hydrogenation of the aforementioned aldehyde composition, containing a mixture of hydroxymethyl-substituted fatty acids or fatty acid esters having the following composition by weight: greater than about 10 to less than about 95 percent monoalcohol {mono(hydroxymethyl)}, greater than about 1 to less than about 65 percent diol {di(hydroxymethyl)}, greater than about 0.1 to less than about 10 percent triol, tri(hydroxymethyl)-substituted fatty acids or fatty acid esters; preferably greater than about 3 to less than about 35 percent saturates; and preferably, less than about 10 percent unsaturates. The alcohol composition can be converted into an oligomeric polyol for use in the manufacture of polyurethane slab stock flexible foam.

Aldehyde and alcohol compositions derived from seed oils

A polyurethane-polymer composition suitable for preparing a lightweight tire support includes at least one isocyanate, at least one polyol, and at least one chain extender. A polyurethane-polymer composition can also include an additive such as a catalyst, a filler, a surfactant, a colorant, and a mold-release agent. A lightweight tire support can be prepared from a polyurethane-polymer composition by, for example, reaction injection molding. Such a tire support desirably has temperature stability and load-bearing capability.

Dispersions of hybrid polyurethane particles are made using miniemulsion techniques. An isocyanate-terminated prepolymer and a monomer are mixed and dispersed in an aqueous phase to form a dispersion of droplets. All droplets are polymerized and chain-extended in one step to form hybrid particles containing a polyurethane and a polymer of the monomer. This process provides a simple method of making hybrid particles, in which particle size and the number of particles is controlled in the mixing step. The hybrid particles often have a core-shell morphology, with the polyurethane being concentrated in the shell and the polymer being concentrated in the center of the particle.

Process for preparing aqueous dispersions of hybrid polyurethane particles

A process is disclosed for producing resilient polyurethane foams by foaming an organic polyisocyanate, an iso-cyanate-reactive compound and a fusible polymer. The improvement in the hardness of the foams is achieved without adversely affecting the other properties of the foams, such as tensile strength and elongation.
