Some embodiments of the present invention generally relate to devices and methods for determining and/or isolating cells. For example, one aspect is generally directed to methods and devices for detecting, identifying, counting, and/or potentially sorting cells of interest in blood or other biological sample. In some embodiments, blood samples (or other biological fluids) may be treated with signaling entities, such as pH-sensitive entities, that change color or otherwise produce a signal in suitable internal environments. For example, certain cells, such as cancer or fetal cells, may have differences in intracellular pH compared to other cells, which can be detected using pH-sensitive entities. In certain embodiments, the cells may be sorted based on such signaling entities; for example, illumination of cells in a suitable machine for sorting cells (e.g., using fluorescent light) may allow determination of the cells, which may also be recovered or isolated for further manipulation in some cases.

Devices and methods for determining and/or isolating cells such as circulating cancer or fetal cells

The invention discloses methods and devices for rapidly detecting a biological or other residue in a liquid sample. In some embodiments of the instant invention, a single electrode is employed to contact a flowing aqueous solution, with electrical outputs being recorded by an electrical metering device. Injection or flow of sample leads to changes in solution electrostatic behavior; those changes are recorded in the metering device, with absence of predetermined residues or targets yielding the highest signals. General and specific target detection may be performed with various embodiments of the instant invention.

Devices and methods for identifying a biological or chemical residue in an aqueous sample

The invention discloses methods and devices for rapidly detecting a biological and/or chemical residue in a liquid sample. In some embodiments of the instant invention, a single antenna is generally employed in proximity to an aqueous solution in a disposable cup, with electrical outputs being recorded by an electrical metering device in communication with the single antenna. Commercial plastic cups may be used for detection of electric fields related to cleanliness of water samples. General and specific target detection may be performed with various embodiments of the instant invention.

The present invention generally relates to devices and methods for determining and/or isolating cells. Devices and methods for determining and/or isolating circulating cancer cells

The present invention describes a car anti-theft system. Specifically, the present invention has an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) patterned onto a visible surface of a vehicle. Vehicle theft is recognized when an unauthorized driver fails to enter a predetermined code, resulting in lighting of OLED. Lighted OLED may be seen by passers-by who may then alert police that a car is in the process of being stolen. Alternatively and additionally, OLED's may be integrated into primary car alarm systems so as to add an additional, visual, layer of car protection.

In-transitcar alarm

A sensor for detecting analytes of interest is described. Analyte presence or concentration is determined through measurement of changes in induced electromotive force, current or other electrical property in a sensor strip during analyte exposure to the sensor. According to one class of embodiments, the present device immobilizes natural or synthetic macromolecules sufficiently close to an electrically-conductive base member to insure that interaction of analyte with the macromolecules will lead to altered de novo electrical signals in the sensor strip of base member and macromolecules. Performance of the sensor is enhanced by the use of resistance-modifying element in a circuit that includes the sensor strip, and by an adhesive agent disposed between the base member and at least one electrical lead of a detection unit.

Analytic sensor apparatus and method

The present invention relates to a sensor for analyte detection. The sensor makes use of changes in electrostatic fields associated with macromolecular binding agents during their interaction with analytes. Specifically, analyte presence leads to increases in magnetic flux generated by the motions of the binding agent electrostatic material. Magnetic or induced electrical signals may be monitored for change in order to detect analyte in a sample of interest.

Electromagnetic sensor

A sensor for detecting analytes is described. Analyte presence or concentration is determined through measurement of changes in induced electromotive force, current or other electrical property in a base member during analyte exposure to the sensor. According to one class of embodiments, the present device immobilizes natural or synthetic macromolecules sufficiently close to an electrically-conductive base member to insure that any alteration in the motion and/or electrostatic fields of the macromolecules during interaction with a predetermined analyte will induce an increased electromotive force in the base member.

Sensor for analyte detection

The device described herein is an enzyme-based biosensor for detecting and/or quantifying molecules of interest. The biosensor relies on the following properties shared by all enzymes: (1) that enzymes are highly specific molecules designed to bind with only one analyte type or one class of analyte molecules; (2) that enzymes contain charges; (3) that enzymes undergo significant spacial fluctuation during periods of interaction with substrates; and (4) that these spacial fluctuations cause the charged moieties on the enzyme to move and thus generate a measurable electrostatic potential (voltage) in both the enzyme and support layers. The instant device determines analyte presence/concentration through measurement of changes in voltage or current in a conducting or semiconducting support material as a result of changes in the position of immobilized charged enzyme molecules during their interaction with analyte. More particularly, the instant device immobilizes enzyme molecules sufficiently close to a conducting or semiconducting layer to insure that any alteration in the position of charged groups of the enzyme during interaction with analyte will cause the generation of a voltage in the base layer. When the enzymes encounter the targeted analyte the enzymes move, thus causing the enzyme charges to move. The movement of charges, in turn, changes the electrostatic field around the enzymes and results in a corresponding generation of a dipole (as measured in a generated voltage) in the conducting or semiconducting base layer. The presence and quantity of generated voltage is used to signal the presence and quantity of analyte.
