Techniques for facilitating communication between a first group communication system and a second group communication system. A naming convention of the first group communication system allows at least one name which contravenes a naming convention of the second group communication system. A communicator is joined to the second group communication system. The communicator was previously joined to the first group communication system and has a first name at the first group communication system. The communicator has a second name at the second group communication system. The second name can be requested from the second group communication system. The second name can also be generated by applying an algorithm to the first name. A processor performs translation between the first name and the second name in a communication between the communicator and the second group communication system. The translation is performed based on a translation data structure.

Extending name space size of legacy group communication systems

An apparatus and program product generate difference data representative of modifications made to one release of a standard code base to facilitate the adaptation of later releases of the standard code base. The difference data is generated at least in part in connection with canonical parsing of a modified version of a release of a standard code base such that the difference data is representative of semantic changes made in the modified version.

A rollback support method for transactions a node among nodes in a distributed system, including modifying a disposable cache copy of data as part of transaction, propagating a version state and/or a data state of the modified cache to any of the nodes, verifying non-violation of a transaction semantic and/or a replication policy relating to the transaction, committing the transaction to any nodes if successful, revising a version state of other reliable replicas and disposable cache copies in the system based on the version state of the modified disposable cache copy, the disposable cache copies being members of a membership-based view, and updating a data state of other reliable replicas in the system based on the data state of the modified copy, and aborting the transaction if it fails, including restoring the disposable cache copy based on any reliable replicas and/or disposable cache copies in the system.

Rollback support in distributed data management systems

Methods and systems are provided in a group communication system for dynamically changing a version of a group communication protocol from a first version to a second version transparently to external sources and destinations. The system accommodates newly joining members that can only support versions of the protocol other than the version currently in use without interruption in service. Similarly, the system can upgrade its operating version of the group communication protocol to improve performance when a member having relatively low capabilities exits the group.

A method for visualizing data includes receiving code representing content for display on the screen of a computer, the content including at least one hyperlink to other content and at least one attribute associated with the hyperlink. User preferences are set for each attribute. The content is displayed on the screen, and at least one of the hyperlinks is hidden in response to the combination of user preference for that attribute.

The method for converting speech to text includes receiving a spoken input having a non-verbal characteristic, and automatically generating a text output, responsive to the spoken input, having a variable format characteristic corresponding to the non-verbal characteristic of the spoken input. The method for converting text to speech includes receiving a text input having a given variable format characteristic and synthesizing speech corresponding to the text input and having a non-verbal characteristic corresponding to the variable format characteristic of the text input.

Disclosed is a programming aid for enabling a computer program in source code form to be viewed using a general purpose document browser, which browser is responsive to a defined set of control tags determining the appearance of a document thereon, the programming aid comprising: a parser for generating a symbol table from an input file in which the program is stored; means to derive control tag locations from the symbol table; and an output file generator for inserting control tags into the program at the derived locations to generate an output file which can be viewed using the general purpose document browser. In this way, the full power of available general purpose document browsers may be used in software development and maintenance to view programs in a convenient way. A tool is provided that automatically marks up a program with control tags so that users are free to use the document browser of their choice as a powerful program browser.

Programming aid for enabling a computer program in source code form to

An interactive, tree structured, graphical visualization aid enables a user to better understand and interpret underlying structures in collections of digitally stored data elements, such as documents, programs and other data files. The visualization aid responds to user input, which directs the aid to operate in one of at least two modes. In a first mode, the visualization aid displays a graphical tree structure that includes a selected node and all branches of the selected node, including all subordinate nodes and data elements. In this first mode of operation, all data elements or documents branching either directly from the selected node or directly from subordinate nodes are displayed in the tree structure as branching directly from their respective nodes. In a second mode of operation, the visualization aid displays a graphical tree structure that includes a single group of all data elements or documents that branch either directly from the selected node or directly from subordinate nodes, but the selected node and its subordinate nodes are not displayed.

Interactive, tree structured, graphical visualization aid

A hypertext display system is described in which displayed hypertext links contain a marker indicating whether or not the unit of information to which the link leads has previously been visited by the user, the system being characterized in that the user can cause the display of further information regarding previous visits to that unit of information via a predetermined user input operation at a time when a display cursor is located within the boundaries of the marker. Active markers or footprints are employed associated with links leading to nodes the user has already visited. In one implementation using a graphical user interface, these markers are icons for timestamp windows. The user can activate the markers in order to decide whether or not to revisit the node.

Hypertext display system

A generalized link is provided in a data processing system to enable referencing from a point within an organized hierarchy of an on-line softcopy text, to an arbitrary multimedia object. The multimedia object may be represented by data which is also contained within the softcopy book or alternately which may be separate from the book as a separate file or a separate data base. This enables an author at the time of writing the softcopy book, to specify specific multimedia hardware and software support for the display of multimedia presentations accompanying the text in the book. Provision is made for the author to specify alternate forms of multimedia presentation, where a particular specified multimedia apparatus or supporting software is not present at a workstation. An improved method for dynamically updating a softcopy book to a new edition is also disclosed.
