A downhole borehole imaging tool and methods for determining a borehole size includes a magnetoresistive system and a hub moveably coupled to a fixed tool string. The hub includes a magnet. The magnetoresistive system includes magnetoresistive sensors disposed within the fixed tool string and segregated from the magnet. During operation, a routine scan of all sensors measures, for example, the output voltage V, angle &#x3b8; of magnetic field, and temperature. Measurements from each sensor may then be characterized to account for temperature and input voltages variation of the sensors. The most accurate measurement can be used to derive the position of the hubusing the previous baseline parameters stored in the tool.

Apparatus and method for determining borehole size with a borehole imaging tool

An imaging tool that includes an array of pads. The array of pads are in communication with a hot terminal of a single phase electrical alternating current power source in communication with the array of pads. The single phase electrical alternating current power source includes two return electrodes. One of the return electrodes is located above the array of pads, and the other return terminal is located below the array of pads.

Methods and apparatus for performing a well survey

A technique includes deploying an untethered object through a passageway of a string in a well to cause the untethered object to travel along the passageway. The technique includes operating the untethered object as the object travels in the passageway to expand a metal sealing device of the untethered object to cause the object to become caught at a downhole location.

An impact dissipation tool for supporting a downhole tool in downhole applications. The tool includes a base and a housing. The tool also includes a carriage located within the housing and coupled to the base, the carriage being movable relative to the housing upon a predetermined impact force. A dissipator disposed inside the housing is collapsible due to the relative movement of the carriage and the housing. The collapse of the dissipator dissipates the impact force transferred to the downhole tool.

A downhole tool includes a logging tool. The logging tool includes a spring integral with a sensor. The spring applies the sensor to a formation wall. Additionally, the spring includes a groove formed along a neutral axis thereof. A flexible coupling for well logging instruments includes a housing coupled at one longitudinal end to one end of a second housing. Each of the housings defines a sealed interior chamber. The housings are coupled to enable angular deflection between respective longitudinal axes thereof. A conduit extends between the housings. The conduit is sealingly engaged to each housing such that longitudinal ends of the conduit are substantially positionally fixed with respect to each housing. The conduit is formed from material and has dimensions selected to withstand at least a same hydrostatic pressure as each of the housings. The conduit includes a bending strain distribution feature configured such that at a maximum angular deflection between housings a bending strain in the conduit is at most equal to an elastic limit of the conduit.

A method, system, and apparatus for controlling the temperature within a remotely located enclosure that contains temperature sensitive equipment is provided. For some embodiments, the system includes an array of thermoelectric cooling (TEC) devices that act as an active cooling device and an active heating device. The system may also include a temperature controller that receives signals from a temperature sensor located at or near the temperature sensitive equipment. The controller may be configured to supply DC power to the thermoelectric coupling devices based on the output signal of the temperature sensor. The polarity of the DC power can be reversed by the controller in order to cause the thermoelectric device to heat or to cool the enclosure. The system also contains a passive cooling device. The system includes an independent electrical power source with a battery and solar cell to supply power to the temperature control devices and the equipment contained in the enclosure.

Downhole induction heating tool for enhanced oil recovery

A conveyance apparatus for conveying at least one logging tool through an earth formation traversed by a horizontal or highly deviated borehole. The conveyance apparatus comprises a pair of arcuate-shaped cams pivotally mounted to a support member, a spring member for biasing the arcuate surface of each cam into contact with the borehole wall, and actuators operatively connected to each cam. A logging tool is attached to the conveyance apparatus. When either actuator is activated in a first direction, the cam connected to the activated actuator is linearly displaced forward and the arcuate surface of the cam slides along the borehole wall. When either actuator is activated in a second direction, the activated actuator pulls the connected cam backwards and the spring member thereby urges the arcuate surface of the cam to lock against the borehole wall. Once the cam is locked, further movement of the actuator propels both the conveyance apparatus and the logging tool forward along the highly deviated or horizontal borehole.

Conveying a tool along a non-vertical well

A system for cooling electronic components in the downhole assembly of a drill string through which a drilling fluid flows. The cooling system includes a thermoelectric cooler that conducts heat from the electronic component to a first heat transfer surface of a thermal conductor. The heat received by the first heat transfer surface is transferred within the thermal conductor to a second heat transfer surface that then transfers the heat to a housing. The housing transfers the heat to the drilling fluid flowing over the housing. To ensure good conductive heat transfer between the electronic component, the thermoelectric cooler, the thermal conductor and the housing, and to absorb shock, vibration and differential thermal expansion, these components are supported on a spring mechanism that generates a force that biases the electronic component against the thermoelectric cooler, the thermoelectric cooler against the thermal conductor and the thermal conductor against the housing.
