Systems and methods are provided for detecting anomalies, for instance, user-caused scanning anomalies, which occur during scanning transactions. Scanning-related events may be detected by a scanning device and notifications of such events may be transmitted from the scanning device to a point-of-sale (POS) host device coupled therewith. In aspects, the notifications transmitted to the POS host device include a unique code (e.g., a barcode or label) that is indicative of the corresponding event. Responsive to receipt of the event notifications and the nature thereof, the POS host device may initiate one or more anomaly detection actions.

Utilization of imaging bar-code scanners for detecting anomalies with user scanning methods

Systems and methods for data reading are disclosed wherein one or more images of an item bearing an optical code are captured and the captured images are analyzed to determine whether the item has a reflective surface or not. Based on such a determination, operating parameters of the system, such as one or more of: the amount of time dedicated to 1D code decoding and the amount of time dedicated to 2D code decoding, the order in which 1D code and 2D code decoding are performed, termination of a decoding operation, restarting an image capture and decoding operation, and image preprocessing may be automatically adjusted by the system to decode an optical code.

Adaptive data reader and method of operating

State-of-the-art optical scanning systems feature digital imaging of multiple symbolic labels such as optical bar codes. An imaging scanner reads a label 10 to 100 times faster than a conventional laser scanner because a group of items may be placed in the read zone simultaneously, or an item may bear multiple labels, thus allowing multiple symbolic labels to be captured in a single image. A preferred system/method is directed to a software-implemented 'multiple label double read' protection scheme for preventing duplication errors in an advanced bar code reader using multiple fixed delay timers, with each timer being somewhat analogous to existing 'single label double read' schemes. Determining the presence of duplicate data is accomplished by comparing label data or portions of label data to a set of recent buffered data representing the last N labels read and transmitted within a specified delay time.

Method of preventing multiple reads when scanning groups of optical codes

A system and method for monitoring operation and performance of electronic tags such as article surveillance (EAS) tags or radio frequency identification (RFID) tags such as by monitoring and reporting electronic tag readability and operator/system performance levels. The system includes an optical symbol reader and/or electronic tag sensor/deactivator that measures and reports values of reading, detection, or deactivation events during operation which may be indicative of electronic tag operability. The apparatus may further comprise a data accumulation device including memory storage to accumulate the measurement values for each set of electronic tags, and a programmed computing system to analyze the measured values and report on the results of the analysis.

Operation monitoring and enhanced host communications in systems employing electronic article surveillance and RFID tags

Methods of operation of a data reader and security tag deactivation system whereby a data reader such as a barcode scanner is equipped with EAS deactivation coils or modules disposed in the vicinity of the read volume or generally proximate thereto and the system is operable to permit reading of the ID tag (such as the barcode label) on an item, and upon a successful read, the deactivation unit is operable to (1) sense the presence of an EAS tag; (2) if presence of an EAS tag is sensed, energize the deactivation coil/module to deactivate the EAS tag; and (3) sense if the EAS tag is deactivated. If the EAS tag is sensed to have been deactivated, the system signals as such and a next item may be scanned. If the EAS tag is sensed to have not been deactivated, the system proceeds to alternate operational steps to handle the exception. In another function, the system is operable to urge the operator to return the item to the read volume to enhance EAS tag deactivation, one method being by delaying a good read acknowledgment until the system determines that the EAS tag which may have been previously detected has subsequently been deactivated.

A scanner system and method for improving capture rate of reading labels with add-ons without sacrificing throughput with respect to non-add-on labels, the scanner including a mode in which the scanner in conjunction with the host (point-of-sale terminal) 'learns' over time which base label codes will have associated add-ons. As the scanner successfully reads both a base label and its add-on data, the base label data is stored in a list in the scanner's memory. The required number of reads of base label or the timeout timer value may be adjusted based upon whether add-ons are expected or not corresponding to future scans of a base label corresponding to that of one in the list store. Base label statistics on successful base label and associated add-on reads, as well as ordering and selective storage of base label information based on frequency of base label occurrence may also be provided.
