The present invention involves an optical assay device and method of use for the detection of an analyte of interest in a sample that conveniently allows control of the flow characteristics of the sample through the device without significant user intervention. The optical assay device includes a base having an absorbent material, and a member having an optically active test stack that is rotatably coupled to the base for rotation between a lowered position and a raised position. In the lowered position, the optically active test stack contacts the absorbent material for drawing the sample through the surface. In the raised position, the optically active test stack does not contact the absorbent material.

Optical assay device and method

A device for collecting, testing and transporting a liquid specimen of urine or the like incorporates a cup or container and a cooperating lid which becomes sealed about its upper rim when the lid is mated with the specimen-containing cup. An upwardly open subchamber of defined volume, formed in the bottom wall of the cup, is sealed by engagement with a downwardly extending hollow plug portion of the lid that has a bottom wall containing a central aperture closed by a frangible sheet material seal. When initial testing is to be conducted, an elongated assay cartridge is inserted vertically downward through the hollow plug. The bottom end splits open the frangible seal and enters into the subchamber containing the defined volume of the liquid sample, which becomes totally absorbed by a pair of elongated nitrocellulose strips, along which the liquid moves by capillary action to effect the assay tests.

The present invention relates to cost effective analytical instruments for determining the presence or amount of an analyte in a sample. The analytical instruments utilize an assay cartridge which has a sample receiving port and a rotatable carousel containing a plurality of reagent wells. Each reagent well includes a piston element for delivery of reagent to a test surface. The instrument is capable of indexing the assay cartridge to deliver sample and reagents to a test surface in a predetermined and flexibile manner, thus providing an assay protocol which is specific to the type of sample under analysis. The invention also relates to components, features, disposables, reagent delivery systems, accessories, and methods for using such instruments. Appropriate applications include infectious disease testing, cancer detection and monitoring, therapeutic drug level monitoring, allergy testing, environmental testing, food testing, diagnostic testing of human and veterinary samples, and off-line process testing.
