A network infrastructure device of an apparatus in one example comprises a receive interface and a transmit interface for a communication channel. The network infrastructure device is configured to pass a data stream for the communication channel from the receive interface, through a set of signal processing blocks, and to the transmit interface. The network infrastructure device is configured to analyze the data stream for an occurrence of a predetermined data pattern. The network infrastructure device is configured to automatically add and/or remove one or more signal processing blocks from the set of signal processing blocks upon the occurrence of the predetermined data pattern.

In one implementation, a first voice stream for a packet-switched call is received from a calling party. The first voice stream conforms to a first silence suppression scheme and comprises a plurality of encoded packets for the packet-switched call. A subset of encoded packets are selected from the plurality of encoded packets to create a second voice stream that conforms to a second silence suppression scheme. The second voice stream comprises the subset of encoded packets. The first silence suppression scheme is distinct from the second silence suppression scheme. The second voice stream is forwarded toward a called party for the packet-switched call.

An apparatus in one example comprises a receiver of a first mobile switching center. The receiver is configured to receive an input signal in a first encoding format. The input signal has an input payload. The first encoding format is a dual-mode InterSystem Link Protocol (ISLP)/Enhanced Variable Rate Coding (EVRC) codec. The apparatus further comprises a transcoder operatively coupled to the receiver. The transcoder is structured to transcode in a single channel the first encoding format to a second encoding format. The transcoder is configured to generate an output signal in the second encoding format for transmission over an internet protocol (IP) network to a second mobile switching center based on the input signal. The output signal has an output payload based on the input payload. The transcoder is configured to switch between a default voice handling mode for the EVRC codec and a clear channel mode for the ISLP codec to form the output payload.

A method and apparatus are provided for determining the quality of a speech transmission, including temporal clipping, delay and jitter, using a carefully constructed test signal () and digital signal processing techniques. The test signal that is to be transmitted through a speech transmission system () is created (). Then the test signal is transmitted through the speech transmission system such that the speech transmission system creates an output signal that corresponds to the input signal, as modified by the speech transmission system (). The test signal includes multiple segments () of speech signals interleaved with periods of silence. The periods of silence vary in duration according to a predefined pattern. Each segment of speech signals includes multiple predefined speech samples or symbols () interleaved with a plurality of silence gaps. The speech samples have a common period of duration, but the silence gaps do not. The output signal from the speech transmission system is preferably recorded () and analyzed to determine its quality, including temporal clipping (). This analysis preferably includes comparing the output signal with a reference signal derived from the test signal using a cross correlation function. A processor () coupled to memory () records and analyzes the output signal.

Method and apparatus for measuring the quality of speech transmissions that use speech compression

A method and apparatus for providing call admission control in a packet network such as an internet protocol (IP) network are provided. More particularly, a terminating endpoint of a logical connection on a packet network, e.g. an IP network, is provided with the ability to make a decision on whether to accept or reject an incoming call based on quality of service (QoS) indicator based on QoS metrics. These metrics indicate quality of service levels for specific logical connections and are accumulated over specified time periods.

Method and apparatus for providing call admission control in packet networks

An arrangement where a plurality of digital signal processors cooperate in the performance of a digital signal processing function. The processors are interconnected by means of a synchronous network which provides time division multiplexed communication links between processors for communicating intermediate processing results therebetween. The synchronous network includes a plurality of port circuits each associated with one of the processors. The network generates timing signals defining frames of time slots and defining superframes comprising N frames. Each port circuit can control the transmission of digital data from a memory of its associated processor during M1 time slots of each superframe. Each port circuit can also control the writing of digital data to its associated processor during M2 time slots of each superframe. The value of N, the number of frames per superframe, is programmable. The values of M1 and M2 are also programmable for each port circuit.
