Methods and systems are described for increasing the safety of unmanned vehicles. Failure rates of components can be combined and adjusted if necessary given sensor data or statistical or historical data that impacts failure rates. The failure rates of components can be combined to give an overall failure or success rate for a vehicle and can be compared to an accepted failure or success rate in connection with a hazard. Hazards with heightened safety requirements can be avoided by a contingency maneuver if the unmanned vehicle's failure or success rate is not acceptable.

Unmanned aircraft vehicle state awareness

Systems and methods include providing an aircraft with a fuselage and a convertible engine disposed within the fuselage. The convertible engine is operable as a turbofan engine in a thrust mode and a turboshaft engine in a shaft power mode. The convertible engine includes a housing, an engine core having a low pressure turbine shaft, and a bypass fan system. The bypass fan system includes a bypass fan having a fan clutch. The fan clutch selectively couples at least a portion of the bypass fan to the low pressure turbine shaft when the convertible engine is operated in the thrust mode and decouples at least a portion of the bypass fan from the low pressure turbine shaft when the convertible engine is operated in the shaft power mode.

A method of verifying operation of an aircraft in a pre-defined flight mode includes operating the aircraft in a first flight mode, commanding the aircraft to transition to a second flight mode, evaluating a plurality of motor performance parameters, and based on values of the plurality of motor performance parameters, determining whether the aircraft has successfully transitioned to the second flight mode.

A blade-pitch change mechanism includes a motor comprising a rotating motor shaft and a housing, a solenoid coupled to a first end of the rotating motor shaft and to the housing, and a hub coupled with a second end of the rotating motor shaft. The hub includes a cylindrical puck having formed therein a gated castellated groove and connected to the second end of the rotating motor shaft and a cylindrical blade-pitch hub selectively couplable with the cylindrical puck via a plurality of drive pins and having formed therein a blade-pitch adjustment groove.

In one example embodiment, a filter condition measurement device features an engine data repository, one or more sensor units, and a measurement unit. The measurement system is configured to identify a first flow value corresponding to a sensed engine power value from the engine data repository, determine a filter coefficient for the filter as a function of the first flow value and the sensed delta-pressure value; identify a second engine power value from the plurality of stored engine power values and a second flow value corresponding to the second engine power value; and determine a second delta-pressure value for the air filter as a function of the filter coefficient and the second flow value.

In one example embodiment, an engine flow measurement device features an engine data repository, one or more sensor units, and a measurement unit. The measurement system is configured to identify, from performance data, a maneuver performed during operation of the aircraft and to measure, for the identified maneuver, a plurality of maneuver flow values achieved during performance of the maneuver. The plurality of maneuver flow values correspond to a plurality of maneuver engine power values. Each of the plurality of maneuver flow values represent a volume of air flow through the air filter at a particular moment during performance of the maneuver.
