A method of updating an electronic device. The device has a non-volatile memory divided into at least three non-overlapping sections, a bootstrap image section, a updater image section, and a application image section. The method includes erasing the application image section of the non-volatile memory, receiving a firmware update, writing the firmware update into the application image section, rebooting the electronic device, determining one of an application program and an updater program resides in the application image section, executing the application program when the application program is determined to reside in the application image section, erasing the updater image section of the non-volatile memory when the updater program is determined to reside in the application image section, and moving the updater program from the application image section to the updater image section.

Failsafe firmware updates

A security system includes a perimeter sensor configured to cause an alarm signal to be issued after a first period of time upon sensing a security breach. An interior sensor is configured to cause an alarm signal to be issued after a second period of time upon sensing a security breach. The second period of time is shorter than the first period of time. A controller is communicatively coupled to each of the perimeter sensor and the interior sensor. The controller is adapted, in response to the perimeter sensor entering into a fault condition, to reconfigure the interior sensor to cause an alarm signal to be issued after a third period of time upon sensing a security breach. The third period of time is longer than the second period of time.

Method and apparatus for controlling the timing of an alarm signal in a security system

A method of installing a security system includes activating a security device. An air-borne identification signal is transmitted from the device in response to the activation. The identification signal identifies the activated device. The identification signal is used to ascertain a type of the device. The device is automatically wirelessly configured dependent upon the type of the device.

Method and apparatus for installing a wireless security system

A method of operating a security system includes activating a security device and transmitting a first status report from the device in response to the activating step. A second status report is transmitted from the device after the first status report has been transmitted. The second status report is indicative of a status of an input of the security device. It is determined whether the first status report indicates a status different than the status indicated by the second status report. A third status report is transmitted from the device after the second status report has been transmitted. The third status report is indicative of the input of the security device being in an alarm condition and/or a trouble condition. Dependent upon whether the first status report indicates a status different than the status indicated by the second status report, an alarm and/or a trouble warning are issued in response to the third status report.

Method and apparatus for reducing false alarms in a security system

A method of installing a security system includes transmitting an air-borne request signal to a security device. An air-borne reply signal is transmitted from the device in response to the request signal. The reply signal includes identification information corresponding to the device.
