Making a tire mold by spraying molten atomized metal on a model to form a metal shell and then reinforcing the shell with a resin backing to form a mold segment for the tire mold. Modular shoe container assemblies have replaceable backing members for making different size molds and flat plate spacers for providing different thicknesses of the mold segment. In one embodiment a slide block is used for one side of the cavity whereby a sole plate is eliminated.

Method and apparatus for making a tire mold

Detaching a cured tire from mold sections of a tire mold during opening of the mold by communicating air under pressure into the space between the mold sections and confining the air in this space with a sleeve member supported on the upper mold section and slidably urged into sealing engagement with the lower mold section. Air under pressure is then communicated from the space between the mold sections to the spaces between the cured tire surface and the molding surfaces of the upper and lower mold sections to detach the tire. Sealing rings on the sleeve and on the upper mold section prevent leakage of the air under pressure from the space between the mold section. Spring means between the upper mold section and the sleeve member provide extension of the sleeve member into sealing engagement with the lower mold section.

Detachment of tires from molds

Injection molding a tread on an annular tire casing (44) positioned in a mold (10') by introducing a fluid molding compound (76',78') at high pressures and high temperatures into a tread molding space (105) through runner passages (114) extending from an edge (116) to a centerplane (20'--20') of the mold (10') and having gates (118) opening into the tread molding space (105). Alternatively the runner passages (56,58) may be defined by annular runner surfaces (60,62,64,66) in communication with the tread molding space (48) through annular gates (52,54). The fluid molding compound (76,78) may be ejected from annular transfer recesses (68,70) in the mold (10) by squeeze rings (84,86) movable into the transfer recesses (68,70) to introduce the fluid molding compound (76,78) into the runner passages (56,58).

A duplex extruder head for receiving extrudate from each of two extruders to deliver a composite unitary extrudate such as tire tread stock has a cavity plug or vee-block insert secured in an open top channel-shaped receiver without bolts or hinges by a pair of slidable clamps. The head also has a transverse slot for slidably receiving a die assembly endwise into the slot. The die assembly is then elevated to operating position and securely clamped by a pair of wedge-like gibs. Clamping of either the insert or the die assembly is effected by hydraulic cylinder or equivalent means. The foregoing abstract is not to be taken as limiting the invention of this application, and in order to understand the full nature and extent of the technical disclosure of this application, reference must be made to the accompanying drawing and the following detailed description.

Duplex extruder head

A die clamp fixing an extruder final product profile die is secured relative to an extruder die head vertical front face and conveniently removed or interchanged. The die clamp swings about a horizontal pin to a horizontal position where the final die can be lifted freely from or placed on the clamp. The arrangement provides for a flow distributing insert readily removed or interchanged in like manner.
