A method of securing a screw-receiving plug in an over-sized hole preformed in a fixture comprises the steps of: (a) providing at least one piece of a loosely-woven fabric carrying consolidated thereon a quick-setting filler material, which fabric piece is sized to envelop at least circumferentially the plug intended to be used; (b) enveloping the plug circumferentially in the fabric piece; (c) activating the filler material; and (d) inserting the enveloped plug in the hole in a manner such as to ensure filling of the hole by the enveloped plug. On setting, the activated filler material and fabric restrain the plug against rotation when a screw is being driven into the plug thereby to secure the screw in the fixture. The preferred filler material is plaster of Paris.

The invention relates to a cigarette paper having a low total filler content, 20% by weight of the paper or less, a proportion of the filler being a filler capable of effecting visible sidestream smoke reduction. The basis weight of the paper is about 30 g m.sup.-2 or more. Smoking articles made with such papers provide a synergistic sidestream smoke component reduction when compared with control cigarettes. Papers according to the invention with the addition of various burn additives are also described.

Low filler content cigarette wrappers

The invention relates to a cigarette paper having a low total filler content, 20% by weight of the paper or less, a proportion of the filler being a filler capable of effecting visible sidestream smoke reduction. The basis weight of tbh paper is about 30 g m.sup.-2 or more. Smoking articles made with such papers provide a synergistic sidestream smoke component reduction when compared with control cigarettes. Papers according to thee invention with the addition of various burn additives are also described.

Smoking articles in the form of a smoking material rod enclosed with a filter means by a paper wrapper are described wherein the density of the smoking material is in a range of from about 100 mg cm.sup.-3 to about 260 mg cm.sup.-3. The smoking material contains at least 20% by weight of expanded tobacco while the filter means has a filtration efficiency less than about 45% for removal of particulate matter. Ventilation means is operable to provide a ventilation level of at least 30%. Smoking articles in accordance with the disclosure exhibit acceptable mainstream smoke over the whole of the smoking process, i.e., there is less perception of an increase in mainstream smoke temperature.

The invention concerns a method of lap joining pieces of tobacco in which the said pieces are placed in overlapping relationship and the overlapping portions are adhered to each other, without using extraneous adhesive, by the application to them of pressure and/or rapid heating. Pressure may be applied between rollers or between jaws, particularly the jaws of an electrical impulse-heating machine. In this case, the overlapping portions lap joined by the rapid application of heat and pressure may be cooled while still held between the said jaws. Prior or subsequent to lap joining, a consolidating agent may be applied to end portions of the tobacco pieces.
