Described are devices, implants, kits, and related methods for treating pelvic conditions such as urinary in incontinence, in a male or a female patient. The invention includes, in one embodiment, a multi-piece implant, including a tissue support piece, extension portion, and one or more self-fixating tips. The device may be employed through a medial incision in the pelvic region of the patient.

The present invention provides an artificial sphincter employing an easily controlled electro-mechanical pump system. The artificial sphincter includes an inflatable cuff, a control pump fluidly coupled to the inflatable cuff, and an electro-mechanical pump system. The inflatable cuff is adapted to surround a urethra or rectum of the patient to facilitate continence. An inflation element or balloon can be included to further control pressure to the cuff.

Artificial sphincter system and method

In a method of implanting an electrode of an electronic stimulator device into a pelvic floor muscular structure of a patient, a stimulation lead having a proximal end and a distal end comprising an electrode is provided. The distal end of the stimulation lead is fed along a path, which is adjacent the pubic symphysis of a patient, toward a pelvic floor muscular structure of the patient. The distal end of the stimulation lead is then fed into the pelvic floor muscular structure of the patient. In one embodiment, the pelvic floor muscular structure comprises the external urinary sphincter of the patient. In accordance with other embodiments, the pelvic floor muscular structure comprises one of the external anal sphincter, the levator ani muscle, the puborectalis sling muscle and prostate tissue.

Surgical articles and methods for treating urinary incontinence

In a method of implanting an electrode of an electronic stimulator device into an external urinary sphincter of a male patient, a first incision is made in the perineum of the patient between the anus and the scrotal-perineal junction. A distal end of a stimulation lead is then fed through the first incision, through the perineal membrane and into the external urinary sphincter. The distal end includes the electrode. In one embodiment of the method, a second incision is made in the abdomen of the patient. In one embodiment, the second incision is made lateral to and cephalad to the pubis bone of the patient. Next, a proximal end of the stimulation lead is fed from the first incision to the second incision. In one embodiment, the proximal end of the stimulation lead is coupled to a control unit of the electronic stimulator device. Electrical signals are generated using the control unit and the electrical signals are delivered to the external urinary sphincter through the stimulation lead and the electrode.
