The example system includes a plurality of content items authored independent of the reference platform to define clinical functionality for one or more content-based clinical applications by leveraging the reference platform. In the example system, the plurality of content items is to be created and deployed independently of the creation and deployment of the one or more content-based clinical applications. The plurality of content items is to remain independent of the implementation of the reference platform to allow independent evolution of the platform and the one or more content-based clinical applications.

The constraint definition language processor is to use a compiled, context-free constraint definition language to define the detailed clinical model as a compiled object. The constraint definition language processor is to provide the compiled object as content for at least one of a clinical content database and a clinical information system. Content represents one or more parameters to instruct a clinical application.

The example method includes assigning one or more locations to a source role and a target role based on the one or more location identifiers and an ontology, the ontology including a plurality of relationship types. The example method includes identifying a relationship between the source role and the target role based on the one or more location identifiers and the ontology. The example method includes associating the source role and target role based on the identified relationship. The example method includes utilizing the source role, target role, and identified relationship to configure one or more content items forming the content-based clinical application.
