A catalyst comprising A--V--P, where A is an alkaline earth metal, has been found to be effective in the oxidation of butane to maleic anhydride. The catalyst may be employed in combination with an inert support such as TiO.sub.2. This catalyst is characterized in having high selectivity and stability over extended periods of time.

In the process of making 2,6-dicyanonaphthalene by reacting 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, ammonia and oxygen under ammoxidation conditions at atmospheric pressure, the improvement which comprises carrying out said ammoxidation in the presence of an unsupported alkali-metal vanadium bronze catalyst, optionally promoted with titanium, boron or iron and with a molar ratio of ammonia to 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene of at least about 25:1.

A catalyst comprising SB-Ni-Mo has been found to be very selective, stable and long-lasting in the conversion of butane to maleic anhydride. Other metals such as Co, Cu, or Zn may be substituted for Ni with like results. An improved method for preparing this catalyst is also provided herein.
