A method for moving and controlling a video surveillance camera comprises the steps of: supporting a video surveillance camera for tilting movements about mutually perpendicular axes; transforming tilt and pan commands into angular movement commands; rotating the camera about the mutually perpendicular axes responsive to the angular movement commands, the video camera having a substantially hemispherical field of view as the camera is pivoted about the axes and the video camera generating a picture which is inverted relative to true horizontal over a portion of the field of view; and, automatically rotating the picture to a substantially right-side-up orientation whenever necessary, whereby a right-side-up picture is provided throughout the field of view without continuous panning rotation of the video camera. In a corresponding system, a servo mechanism tilts the video camera, a motion controller transforms the tilt and pan commands and a video signal processor rotates the picture.

Controlling movement of video surveillance cameras

An inventory of goods is protected from theft by means of electronic article surveillance (EAS) markers integrated with items of the inventory. Each such item has a structural member in which a cavity is integrally formed. A respective magnetostrictive element is housed, free of mechanically clamping constraint, in each cavity. A respective biasing element is located adjacent to the cavity on each such item of inventory. The biasing element provides a magnetic field to bias the respective magnetostrictive element. EAS equipment is provided at a retail store where the inventory is maintained. The EAS equipment generates an alternating electromagnetic interrogation field, and when an item of inventory having the integrated EAS marker is exposed to the interrogation field, the biased magnetostrictive element is excited into mechanical resonance that is detected by the EAS equipment. Alternatively, the integrated EAS marker includes a magnetic element that provides a harmonic signal in response to the interrogation field, and a lubricant coating is provided on the magnetic element to prevent transmission of mechanical stress to the magnetic element.

An electronic article surveillance tag which is responsive to forces applied to the tag's housing. The tag has a piezoelectric film which is attached to the tag housing in such a way that forces which are applied to the tag housing are mechanically coupled to the piezoelectric film. The piezoelectric film generates a voltage which is proportional to the forces mechanically coupled thereto. An alarm detecting means compares the voltage generated by the piezoelectric film with a predetermined reference voltage, and initiates an audible alarm when the voltage generated exceeds the predetermined reference voltage.

A housing assembly for a theft-deterrent tack comprises a housing, at least one frangible vial containing a theft-deterrent substance disposed in the housing and a displaceable member supported by the housing for movement therein to cause fracture of the vial and for concurrently opening a theretofore closed portion of the assembly for egress of the theft-deterrent substance. The displaceable member has a first end portion, an opposed second end portion and an intermediate portion, the first end portion being in an interference movement path with the vial. The housing has a bounding surface having an opening therethrough, the displaceable member second end portion being resident in the housing bounding surface opening when the displaceable member is in non-fracturing relation to the vial. The displaceable member defines a passage therethrough opening into both of the first and second end portions thereof. A pin is disposed in the passage and, together with a locking member applied to a pin free end distal from the housing, is operative to secure the housing assembly to a garment to be protected.
