The invention provides a use of a material comprising antimony silicate as a sorbent in the removal of metal ions, e.g. radioactive metal ions, from an acidic liquid medium. The metal ions may be selectively removed from amongst other ions such as Na, K, Mg, and Ca ions. Strontium is particularly effectively removable in this way. There is also provided a method of preparing an antimony silicate material for use in removing metal ions. The invention further provides a material comprising antimony silicate doped with one or more elements selected from the group consisting of tungsten, niobium and tantalum. The doped material has been found to be particularly effective as a sorbent in the removal of metal ions from a liquid medium.

It has already been suggested that chronic exposure of humans to nitrous oxide is a potential health hazard. There is especial concern for those working in the vicinity of a patient to whom nitrous oxide is administered as an anaesthetic. The present invention provides a disposable surgical mask characterized in that a layer comprising particles of a molecular sieve based on silicon dioxide and having an affinity for nitrous oxide is disposed between adjacent layers of the mask. Wearing such a mask reduces personal exposure to nitrous oxide.

Sodium zinco/stanno/titano-silicate is synthesized by mixing a concentrated aqueous sodium zincate, stannate or titanate solution with a source of silica (e.g. powdered glass or sodium metasilicate solution) in the ratio 60 g sodium silicate to sodium zincate equivalent to 8.1 g zinc oxide, keeping the temperature at 40.degree. C. for 1/2 hour, diluting threefold with water of 20.degree. C., allowing a precipitate to form overnight, and filtering and drying the residue at 110.degree. C. The resulting sodium zincosilicate may be used in its own right as a water softener or may be converted by cation exchange into any other desired zincosilicate.
