A system and method for fabricating a ball comprising the steps of supporting a spherical core with unlaced covers thereover. Rotating the core upon a first axis to move a portion of the covers through a lacing zone. Lacing the portion of the cover moved through the lacing zone. Rotating the core upon a second axis to move an additional portion of the cover through the lacing zone. Lacing the additional portion of the cover moved through the lacing zone.

Automated lacing for softballs and baseballs

A softball has a high end synthetic leather stitched cover formed from a low density non-woven fiber mat impregnated with polyurethane. The softball, which can be formed to meet association specifications, has a circumference of 11 or 12 inches and a cover to core weight ratio significantly less than 0.1, typically in the range of 0.08-0.16, while meeting durability requirements. The cover preferably has a thickness of 0.045-0.065 inches. Because a greater weight concentration is in the core of the ball, the ball has improved playability characteristics over conventional balls having heavier synthetic leather covers, while exhibiting a sound comparable to that of a leather covered softball when struck with a bat.

Synthetic leather covered game ball

A game ball having a softer core and abrasion resistant cover is particularly well suited for play on hard pavements and cement in inner city areas. The ball has a polyurethane foam core formed from a mixture of 100 parts polyol and 33-40 parts isocyanate. The core has a compression of 0.06-0.07 inches when subjected to a force of 10 lbs. and a coefficient of restitution at 88 feet per second of less than 0.45, and preferably 0.30-0.40. A molded polyvinyl chloride plastisol cover is formed over the core, resulting in a game ball for which the ratio of the coefficient of restitution of the ball to the coefficient of restitution of the core is in the range of about 0.90-0.99. The cover preferably is a durable molded cover having a Shore A hardness of about 60-70 and a tensile strength of about 1,400-1,800 psi. The ball of the invention has restricted flight characteristics and is particularly well suited for use on smaller ball fields.

Game ball for urban use

Disclosed herein is ball-catching glove having a front portion and a back portion defining a hand space therebetween, an opening at an edge of the glove which is configured for passage of the hand of the wearer into the hand space, and an elastic liner formed in the hand space and connected to the front portion. The liner is configured to draw the wearer's hand toward the front portion, thereby providing for improved control by the wearer in opening and closing the glove.

An improved basketball comprising an interior spherical bladder formed principally of synthetic butyl rubber with a thickness of about 0.82 millimeters; an intermediate layer of monofilament strands formed of nylon and wound around the bladder to a thickness of between about 0.3 and 0.7 millimeters; an exterior carcass of molded natural rubber formed of two hemispheres with exteriorly projecting ribs or channels; and a plurality of polyurethane inserts formed with matted fibers of nylon or a polyester with a diameter of about 1 micron adhered to the exterior surface of carcass between the channels, the inserts having a thickness of about 1.8 millimeters.

A coating composition for game balls, such as baseballs and softballs, is provided. The coating composition is comprised of a specific film-forming binder system, a fluorescent pigment, at least one compatible solvent and additional components including texturizing and leveling agents. The various constituents of the coating composition are combined together in predetermined, relative proportions to produce a composition which, when applied to a game ball such as a softball, provides a coating having qualities including a bright fluorescent color, excellent durability and weather resistance, as well as a soft leathery texture.
