In a refrigeration system having a compressor, a condenser, an evaporator, and a controller for controlling an expansion valve, a process for controlling compressor discharge during a cooling cycle includes monitoring a compressor discharge temperature, operating the expansion valve in a base mode wherein the expansion valve is controlled in response to a difference between actual superheat and desired superheat of the evaporator; and controlling the expansion valve in response to a difference between a set point and a compressor discharge parameter when the ambient air temperature, the return air temperature and the compressor discharge temperature meet respective limits.

Compressor discharge control on a transport refrigeration system

A refrigerated container having an air compressor for maintaining a controlled atmosphere includes provisions for cooling the ambient air being drawn in by the air compressor to thereby prevent corrosion in the air compressor. A condensing line heat exchanger is connected between an inlet port and the compressor and is so disposed that the evaporator fan passes air thereover to provide cooling to the ambient air passing therethrough such that condensation forms within the tube. A water separator is included in the system to remove condensate and allow the drier air to pass to the compressor. The water separator is so constructed as to allow for the free flow of air therethrough with very little restriction. A drain fitting in the water separator is so constructed as to prevent spattering that might otherwise occur.

An outdoor condensing furnace is provided with a condensate drain line which passes through the heat exchange compartment and to a location within the building where it can be discharged at temperatures above freezing. During heating operation, the drain line is maintained at temperatures above freezing such that the condensate will not freeze, and if condensate is trapped in the drain line and freezes during periods of nonheating operation, then it will be quickly thawed when heating operation is resumed. In an alternate embodiment, a drain pan is placed in direct contact with the primary heat exchanger and the condensate is routed to drain pan to be vaporized. Another embodiment provides for routing of the condensate from the condensing heat exchanger, through a flue pipe, and to a drain site which is at above freezing ambient conditions.

Condensate drainage system for an outdoor condensing furnace

A split air conditioner unit having a distributor located indoors for delivering refrigerant to a plurality of evaporator flow circuits. The distributor is connected to an outdoor condenser by a refrigerant line containing an expansion device. A strainer is located at the entrance to the distributor that homogenizes the expanded two phase mixture so that refrigerant of equal quality is delivered to each of the evaporator flow circuits.

A refrigeration expansion valve meters the flow of refrigerant therethrough through a flexible orifice that varies in cross sectional area as a function of the pressure differential across the valve. The flexible orifice is provided in a tubular elastomeric element that is supported at opposite ends by rigid support means. A rigid spacer means is provided for engaging the support means to prevent the pressure differential of the refrigeration system from exerting an axial force on the flexible flow metering element.

A holder for use with a refrigerant purity sampling tube is provided with a base and two end fittings. The end fittings are adapted to establish a releasably fluid tight relationship with the opposite ends of a sampling tube. One end fitting is fixed to the base and the other is slideably mounted for movement toward and away from the fixed fitting. A spring biases the movable end fitting toward a fixed fitting. Movement of the movable fitting against the biasing force allows removal and insertion of a sampling tube. When a new tube is inserted, the biasing force assures fluid tight engagement with the seal.

Fixture for supporting a refrigerant sampling tube in a closed system

A heat pump diagnostic and control system for controlling indoor coil freeze-up when in the cooling mode is provided. A low indoor coil temperature is sensed, the indoor fan speed is increased in steps up to a maximum to thaw the frost on the indoor coil. If this is not sufficient, the compressor speed is then reduced in steps until it is turned off and if necessary, it is held off until such time as the temperature sensor indicates thawing of the indoor coil of the heat exchanger. Diagnostic flow chart and control circuitry for accomplishing this control are disclosed.
