An injection nozzle for use in delivering fuel to a combustion space, the injection nozzle comprising a nozzle body, at least a part of which is provided with a first coating arranged so as to reduce the temperature of at least a part of the nozzle body, in use. The coating may have either a higher or lower thermal conductivity than the thermal conductivity of the nozzle body.

Injection nozzle

A connector, for example as shown in FIG.,for use in supplying fuel to a fuel injector comprises a tubular member arranged to be received, in use, within an opening provided in an engine cylinder head, the tubular member being shaped, at a first end thereof, for cooperation with part of the fuel injector, a second end of the tubular member being shaped for cooperation with an inlet adapter member. The inlet adaptor member is secured, in use, within the opening, the inlet adapter member and the tubular member defining a flow passage whereby fuel can be supplied, under pressure, to the fuel injector.

Connector

A connector is disclosed which is intended for use with an injector. The connector comprises a projection defining an inlet passage sealed, in use, within a bore provided in the injector. The inlet passage communicates with at least one outlet passage. The connector further comprises at least one tooth received within a recess provided in the injector to secure the connector to the injector. The recess is conveniently defined by a body and nut forming part of the injector.

A mounting arrangement for mounting a component, for example a fuel injector, in a desired position comprises a sleeve which surrounds part of the component and includes a screw-threaded end region. At a point spaced from the first end, the sleeve defines a groove arranged to receive a resilient member which cooperates, in use, with a groove provided in the component to secure the component to the sleeve.

Mounting arrangement

A fuel system is disclosed which comprises a fuel pump, a spill valve and an injector provided in a single unit. The injector includes a valve member biased towards a seating by a coiled compression spring. The spring is engaged between a spring abutment of the valve member and a piston. The piston is arranged such that the face thereof facing away from the spring has fuel applied thereto when the spill valve is opened in order to assist movement of the valve member into engagement with the seating.

Fuel system

A fuel pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine has an injection pump supplied with fuel by a low pressure feed pump through an adjustable throttle. A fluid pressure operable piston is movable against the action of a spring to control the timing of delivery of fuel by the injection pump. Fuel under pressure is applied to the piston through a first fixed orifice from the feed pump. A second fixed orifice and a variable orifice are connected in series between a drain and the downstream side of the first fixed orifice. In parallel with the first fixed orifice is a constant pressure drop valve which maintains the pressure drops across the first fixed orifice substantially constant when the pressure drop has risen to a predetermined value.

Fuel injection pumping apparatus

A fuel injection pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to a compression ignition engine has a low pressure pump which supplies fuel to a high pressure pump by way of a throttle. The high pressure pump has a piston for varying the timing of delivery of fuel. A first fixed orifice connects the outlet of the low pressure pump to the cylinder containing the piston and a second fixed orifice connects the cylinder with a drain by way of a variable orifice. In parallel with the second fixed orifice is a bypass valve including a valve member responsive to the pressure applied to the piston and which with increasing pressure opens to allow fuel to escape through a further fixed orifice from downstream of the second fixed orifice.

A liquid fuel pumping apparatus includes a plunger and a piston which together are moved inwardly by cam means to deliver excess fuel for starting an engine, the plunger only being effective to supply fuel to the engine when the latter has attained a predetermined speed. The piston constitutes a valve to permit fuel and any air contained within the cylinder to escape from the cylinder during the initial inward movement of the piston.

Liquid fuel pumping apparatus

A fuel pumping apparatus comprises a piston movable by fluid pressure to vary the timing of delivery of fuel to an associated engine. Valve means provides fuel under pressure which varies in accordance with the speed at which the engine is driven and fuel at this pressure is applied to the piston through a first fixed orifice. A second fixed orifice is connected to the downstream side of the first orifice and a variable orifice is provided to control the fluid flow through the second orifice. The size of the variable orifice is dependent upon the amount of fuel supplied to the associated engine by the apparatus. In addition a pressure responsive valve is provided which defines a flow path connected in parallel with one of the orifices, the valve being subjected to a fluid pressure within the system.

Fuel injection pumping apparatus for internal combustion engines

A fuel injection pumping apparatus includes an injection pump to which fuel is supplied from a feed pump under the control of throttle means. A component of the injection pump is adjustable by the application of fluid pressure to a piston. The fluid pressure is derived by way of a fixed orifice the downstream of which is connected to a cylinder containing the piston, the downstream side of the orifice being connected to a drain by way of a second fixed orifice and a variable orifice is provided which is adjustable with the throttle means and which determines the pressure applied to the piston.
