Techniques for systems, methods, and devices for configuring an electronic device for use by a particular end-user. The electronic device can include a low power wireless communication device that transmits a periodic or occasional low power wireless beacon signal. A user operating a computing device within the proximity of the electronic device can detect the beacon signal and establish a corresponding low power wireless communication session. The computing device can then transmit configuration settings specific to the electronic device through the low power wireless communication session to the corresponding low power wireless communication device. The configuration data can be stored in a memory on the low power wireless medication device. When the electronic device coupled to the low power wireless communication device is powered up, it can access the configuration data stored in the memory.

Low power device configuration

A method of printing device discovery includes, with a low energy wireless (LEW) device within the printing device, sending a number of announcement messages. The printing device is in a sleep mode. The method further includes waking up the printing device upon receiving a response to the announcement messages from a mobile computing device. An LEW connection is established with the mobile computing device. The method further includes creating a second non-LEW wireless connection between the printing device and the mobile computing device.

A method embodiment for publishing a PIN for use in establishing a pairing with a printing device, including the printing device generating the PIN in response to a local PIN request. Once the PIN is generated, the printing device prints the PIN. Another method embodiment includes identifying a local request to print a test page as a local PIN request and then printing a test page that includes the PIN.

A print service supports print by reference operations. Software hosted or accessible by a web site performs the required functions. A print client may be a print device, for example, that has an Internet connection. A print client might also be a portable wireless device, for example, which then might transfer data transcoded by the print service to a print device. The print service accepts a reference to print content, resolves the reference, obtains the print content, transcodes the print content into a print device ready format, and allows the print client access to the transcoded print data. The print service method realized by such a web site provides commercial potential for web services and content provider partnerships, as a preferred use of the print service might commence with a user of a portable wireless device obtaining a reference to print content while web surfing, communicating that content.

Print by reference service method

A print by reference method for a portable wireless device allows the portable wireless device to obtain a reference that indicates where a print content is located and to wirelessly communicate the reference to a print device causing the print device to use the reference to locate and obtain a desired set of print content and further causing the print device to print the desired print content. Alternatively, the method may cause the portable wireless device to communicate the reference to a print service which responds to the reference by downloading the print content and then forwarding the print content to a print device for printing.

Print by reference method for portable wireless devices

Example systems, methods, computer-readable mediums, and other forms of a secure foreign enterprise printing system are provided. An example system may include a wireless telephonic logic for communicating with a wireless network web services provider and a wireless network communication logic configured to communicate a print request to the wireless network web services provider using the wireless telephonic logic. The print item may be stored in a first enterprise and may be printed on an image forming device that is located in a second enterprise. The example system may also include an encryption logic configured to facilitate providing security for the print item as it travels from the first enterprise to the image forming device.

Print by reference service communication protocol and interface

A wireless communication protocol for print by reference operations initiated by a portable wireless device. The protocol allows a portable wireless device, such as a handheld personal digital assistant, to initiate a print job with a printer by indicating the nature of the communication as a print by reference operation and identifying a location including print content. The protocol is preferably used as the body of an Object Exchange (OBEX) packet in a Bluetooth RF communication initiated by the portable wireless device with a Bluetooth capable print device, e.g., a printer or multi-function peripheral with a print capability. A preferred embodiment of the wireless communication protocol uses the body of an OBEX packet communicated by Bluetooth RF to include a tag identifying a packet body as being a packet body for a print by reference operation and a location identifying the location of the print content. With a preferred extensible mark-up language format, the location comprises an attribute. Additional attributes may, for example, include attributes enabling security clearance, billing identifications, use of supporting print services, and identification of alternate locations for targeted print content.

Portable wireless device and print device print by reference protocol

A method and system for transmitting data between at least one receiver operatively connected to at least one transmitter, and more particularly to a method and a system for permissible transmission via at least one high-speed link having a plurality of virtual channels. The method includes the receiver sending a virtual channel credit packet for a particular virtual channel to the transmitter, the credit packet being indicative that the receiver is available to receive data and having a unique virtual channel number assigned to said particular virtual channel thereto. The transmitter responds to the virtual channel credit packet, which includes transmitting data to the receiver if data is available. The receiver receives the data transmitted from the transmitter.

Method and system for transmitting data between a receiver and a transmitter

A method of transferring image data between an initiator device and a target device using a IEEE 1394 standard bus. The present invention combines management functions, command functions, and isochronous data transfer to achieve the transfer of image data. The present invention discovers a target configuration using IEEE 1394 reads of a target configuration read only memory space. As part of the management function, the present invention uses a modified asynchronous data transfer protocol to establish a connection between the initiator and the target. Next, the present invention uses command functions to begin a job to transfer image data over an isochronous channel. Also, the present invention uses asynchronous data transfer to exchange printer job language commands to end a job.

Transmission of a first message over a local area network is delayed by a delay value. The delay value is calculated based on a backoff value in a backoff counter and a generated random number. Transmission of the first message is deferred when another node on the local area network begins transmission of another message while transmission of the first message is being delayed for the delay value. The backoff value in the backoff counter is incremented when the transmission of the first message is deferred. The backoff value in the backoff counter is incremented when transmission of the first message collides with transmission of another message by another node on the local area network. The backoff value in the backoff counter is decremented when the first message is transmitted without being deferred and without colliding with transmission of another message.
