A method and device are provided for detecting and determining a type of a coating on either surface of a transparent sheet, measuring a thickness of the transparent sheet and measuring a spacing between at least two transparent sheets. The method and device include at least three discrete light sources, a 2D image generating device, a lens, and a processor. A reflected image area from the surfaces of the transparent sheet from each of the at least three discrete light sources produces a sparse spectrometer profile used to detect the coating and to determine the type of coating on either surface of the transparent sheet. A distance between the reflected image position from the at least three discrete light sources from both surfaces of the transparent sheet is used to calculate the thickness of the transparent sheet and the spacing between at least two transparent sheets.

Coating detection on transparent sheet material

A digitized image of an object may include representations of portions of the object that are obscured, occluded or otherwise unobservable. The image may be a multi-dimensional visual representation of dentition. Characteristics of the dentition and its surfaces, contours, and shape may be determined and/or analyzed. A light may be directed toward and reflected from the dentition. The reflected light may be combined with a reference to determine characteristics of the dentition, including obscured areas such as subgingival tissue.

The out of focus light is eliminated by placing an aperture at a plane which is a conjugate focal plane to the surface of the sample. The result is that the sensor produces a signal only when the sample surface is in a narrow focal range.

A calibration device which has at least two targets. Each target has at least one surface exhibiting areas of optical contrast, and each surface has a general plane of orientation. The targets are oriented such that a general plane of orientation of one target is inclined at an angle relative to the general plane of orientation of a surface of the second target which has areas of optical contrast.
