The presently disclosed technology teaches a transducer head with a read sensor, a write pole, and one or more waveform sensors attached to the transducer head. Further, a waveform propagates in the direction of a BPM and the waveform sensor is configured to detect the waveform after it is reflected from the BPM. Additionally, a spin-polarized current is influenced by the BPM and a spin angular momentum sensor detects changes in spin angular momentum of the current. Further, a processor relates at least one property of the reflected waveform and/or current with positions of patterned bits on the BPM. The processor may then modify a timing signal and/or transducer head position to ensure that data bits are accurately written to the BPM. The end result is the ability to more quickly and accurately detect the patterned bits and synchronize a position of the transducer head with the patterned bits.

Waveform based bit detection for bit patterned media

A micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) disc drive includes high-precision and integrated components to allow for increased functionality, robustness and reduced size as compared to currently produced disc drives. Integrating multiple subcomponents of the disc drive using batch processing provides low manufacturing costs. Furthermore, using MEMS techniques, new features can be added to disc drives. For example, an environmental control component, an accelerometer and/or a thermometer may be integrated into the housing of the disc drive.

A perpendicular writer of the present invention comprises a main pole connected to two return poles and further includes one or more shorting shields thereby reducing erasure field on double layer perpendicular media. The perpendicular writer may include side shorting shields connecting the first and second return poles thereby modifying the crosstrack field gradient. Additionally, the perpendicular writer may include a top shorting shield modifying the downtrack gradient and may additionally include a bottom shorting shield for further reduction of erasure fields. The distance between the main pole and the shorting shields may be modified to customize the write field gradient.

A perpendicular write head includes a main pole, a return pole, and conductive coils. The main pole includes a seedlayer and a magnetic layer that is plated upon the seedlayer. The seedlayer is nonmagnetic, electrically conductive, and corrosion-resistant. The return pole is separated from the main pole by a gap at an air bearing surface of the write head and is coupled to the main pole opposite the air bearing surface. The conductive coils are positioned at least in part between the main pole and the return pole.

A magnetic sensor includes a magnetoresistive sensor element and electrical contacts coupled to the magnetoresistive element configured to sense a response of the magnetoresistive element to a magnetic field. A magnetic shield is positioned adjacent the magnetoresistive element and configured to shield the magnetoresistive element from stray magnetic fields. The shield has a substantially stable magnetic domain pattern. A shield flux thief is positioned generally in a plane of the shield and spaced apart from the shield by a gap.

A read while write dual bump tape head for increasing allowable linear and areal bit density comprises first and second thin-film inductive write heads. The first thin film, inductive write head has a first top pole and a first shared pole. The first shared pole is patterned such that it has a width at a tape bearing surface of the dual bump tape head narrower than a width of the first top pole at the tape bearing surface. The second thin-film inductive head has a second top pole and a second shared pole. The second shared pole is patterned such that it has a width at the tape bearing surface narrower than a width of the second top pole at the tape bearing surface.

A shield for a read element of a magnetic recording head is disclosed. The shield includes a first and a second triangular shaped closure magnetic domains positioned approximate a top surface of the shield such that a first surface of each of the first and second magnetic domains are formed by a portion of a first side of the shield and a second side of the shield, respectively. The shield also includes a third and a fourth triangular shaped closure magnetic domains positioned approximate the bottom surface of the shield. A first surface of the third and fourth magnetic domains are formed by a portion of the first side and the second side of the shield, respectively. A first magnetic domain wall is positioned between the first and second triangular shaped closure magnetic domains, while a second magnetic domain wall is positioned between the third and fourth triangular shaped closure magnetic domains.
