A fragment and shuffle erasure coding operation is disclosed. In a transformative operation, encrypted fragments are generated from an input file. The transformative operation includes one or more iterations of chunking the file and mixing the chunks to generate a mixed sequence. The mixed sequence is sliced into encrypted fragments. The encrypted fragments are shuffled in a storage system such that physical locations of the encrypted fragments change over time.

One example method includes receiving a request to perform a data process, determining, by a trustworthy energy awareness (TEA) module, based on energy information and user constraints, a best time to perform the data process, and conveying, by the TEA module to a recipient, information indicating the best time to perform the data process. Techniques are provided for securing data storage by slicing swapped data portions into data fragments and shuffling a physical storage location of the data fragments. One method comprises obtaining at least one data item; dividing the at least one data item into a plurality of data portions; swapping respective positions of at least two of the data portions of the at least one data item; slicing the plurality of data portions, following the swapping, into a plurality of data fragments; and shuffling a distribution of the data fragments across a plurality of storage nodes in a storage system by moving at least one data fragment from a current physical storage location on a current storage node to a different physical storage location on a different storage node. A predefined number of the plurality of data fragments may be needed to reconstruct the data item.

A method includes receiving, at a content provisioning system from one or more client devices, one or more requests for file digests stored in respective data stores of a plurality of data stores in a distributed file system. The file digests are distributed across different ones of the plurality of data stores in the distributed file system. The method also includes determining a location of a given one of the requested file digests in one or more of the plurality of data stores and retrieving the given file digest from the determined location. The method further includes shuffling the distribution of the file digests across the plurality of data stores in the distributed file system.
