There is disclosed a chuck assembly for internally holding a hollow substrate having an open end including: (a) a body including an end section having a width narrower than that of the inner width of the substrate to permit insertion of the end section through the substrate open end into the substrate interior; and (b) a compressible spring coiled around a portion of the end section, wherein prior to compression the spring has an outer width larger than that of the inner width of the substrate, wherein upon insertion of the end section of the body into the substrate the spring is compressed by contact with the substrate inner surface resulting in the chuck assembly holding the substrate by the force generated against the substrate inner surface by the spring in opposition to the compression.

A process for dip coating drums comprising providing a drum having an outer surface to be coated, an upper end and a lower end, providing at least one coating vessel having a bottom, an open top and a cylindrically shaped vertical interior wall having a diameter greater than the diameter of the drum, flowing liquid coating material from the bottom of the vessel to the top of the vessel, immersing the drum in the flowing liquid coating material while maintaining the axis of the drum in a vertical orientation, maintaining the outer surface of the drum in a concentric relationship with the vertical interior wall of the cylindrical coating vessel while the drum is immersed in the coating material, the outer surface of the drum being radially spaced from the vertical interior wall of the cylindrical coating vessel, maintaining laminar flow motion of the coating material as it passes between the outer surface of the drum and the vertical interior wall of the vessel, maintaining the radial spacing between the outer surface of the drum and the inner surface of the vessel between about 2 millimeters and about 9 millimeters, and withdrawing the drum from the coating vessel.

Apparatus for dip coating comprising a drum having an outer surface to be coated, an upper end and a lower end, at least one coating vessel having a bottom, an open top and a cylindrically shaped vertical interior wall having a diameter greater than the diameter of the drum, an inlet at the bottom of the vessel, the inlet adapted to feed flowing coating fluid into the vessel, a mandrel adapted to maintain the outer surface of the drum in a concentric relationship with the vertical interior wall of the cylindrical coating vessel while the drum is immersed in the flowing coating material, the outer surface of the drum being radially spaced from the vertical interior wall of the cylindrical coating vessel, and at least one flow regulating member adapted to maintain laminar flow motion of the coating material as the fluid passes between the outer surface of the drum and the vertical inner wall of the vessel.

There is disclosed a method for drying a cylindrically-shaped substrate having a wet coating thereon which is oriented in a substantially vertical direction comprising directing a plurality of gas streams at a tangential angle against the substrate surface around the circumference of the substrate, wherein there is a plurality of imaginary lines on the substrate surface which are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the substrate, one imaginary line intersecting one gas stream, wherein each gas stream is directed upwards at an acute angle with the intersecting imaginary line, thereby reducing the gas pressure above a portion of the substrate surface which promotes drying of the coating.

Disclosed is a shotting apparatus which comprises a chamber for containing a molten material and a plate with a plurality of orifices through which the molten material can pass to form droplets, wherein the molten material in the chamber first contacts the top surface of the plate and wherein the bottom surface of the plate contains protrusions through which the orifices extend, the length of each protrusion being at least 50 percent of the total length of the orifice passing through the protrusion, wherein the apparatus is of a material selected from the group consisting of silicon carbide and an alloy comprising nickel in an amount of from about 50 to about 70 percent by weight, molybdenum in an amount of from about 11 to about 22 percent by weight, chromium in an amount of from about 11 to about 22 percent by weight, iron in an amount of from 0 to about 10 percent by weight, tungsten in an amount of from 0 to about 10 percent by weight, manganese in an amount of from 0 to about 1 percent weight, and silicon in an amount of from 0 to about 1 percent by weight. Also disclosed is a process which comprises providing the above shotting apparatus, introducing a molten material into the shotting apparatus, allowing the molten material to pass through the orifices to form droplets, and cooling the droplets thus formed to a temperature at which the droplets are solid.

A process for preparing an electrophotographic imaging member comprising providing large particles of an alloy comprising selenium, tellurium and arsenic, the large particles having an average particle size of at least about 300 micrometers and an average weight of less than about 1000 mg, mechanically abrading the surfaces of the large particles while maintaining the substantial surface integrety of the large particles to form between about 3 percent by weight to about 20 percent by weight dust particles based on the total weight of the alloy prior to mechanical abrasion.
