Low bandwidth telecommunications channels are transformed into a high bandwidth telecommunications channel by determining the relative transmission delays among a plurality of relatively low bandwidth channels which are to be combined into a relatively high bandwidth communications channel. The transmission time delay across the plurality of low bandwidth channels is then equalized so that the time delay equalized low bandwidth channels combine to effectively form a single high bandwidth channel. The relative transmission time delays among the low bandwidth channels may be determined by transmitting an alignment (synchronization) signal across each of the low bandwidth channels, receiving the alignment signal from each of the low bandwidth channels, and measuring the time differences among the received alignment signals at each of the low bandwidth channels. Based on the measured time differences, time delay across the plurality of low bandwidth channels is equalized, so that the transmission time delay equalized low bandwidth channels may be combined to effectively form a single high bandwidth channel.

Method and apparatus for transforming low bandwidth telecommunications

A Time Divison Multiplex Ring (TDM Ring) comprising a plurality of nodes (central offices) connected together by interchange trunks (main and standby paths) in a ring type configuration. Each node contains a multiplexer, a demultiplexer, data, alarm, bridging, switching circuits, transmitters and receivers on the main and standby paths, all arranged so that (a) data and alarm signals are transmitted in a first direction on the main path and in an opposite direction on the standby path, (b) the bridging circuit forms a transmission path between the transmitter and receiver on the standby path of each node only in response to a predetermined alarm signal originating from an alarm circuit in another node received at a given node on the main transmission path and (c) the switching circuit is responsive to the presence of a predetermined alarm status to switch the data and alarm circuits at each node from a connection where all transmission is on the main path to a connnection whereby such signals are transmitted at least in part over the standby path.

Time divison multiplex ring

An optical fiber wiring center comprising a base, an optical fiber receiver means attached to and spaced apart from the base, the receiver means containing parallel first and second rows of individual open top cavities, the number of cavities in said first row being essentially equal to the number of cavities in said second row and any given cavity in the first row being essentially coplanar with one other cavity in the second row, and a splice holding means disposed between coplanar cavities.
