Apparatus for applying surgical fasteners to body tissue which includes a body having a proximal portion defining a central longitudinal axis and an articulating distal portion; a fastener cartridge containing at least one surgical fastener therein and positionable in the articulating distal portion; an anvil mounted adjacent the fastener cartridge and defining a fastener forming surface against which surgical fasteners are formed when ejected from the fastener cartridge; a fastener driving mechanism operatively associated with the fastener cartridge and actuatable from the handle to eject the at least one fastener from the fastener cartridge; a link member having a distal portion offset from the body central longitudinal axis and pivotably connected to the articulating distal portion at a point spaced from the body central longitudinal axis, the link member being movable between a proximal-most position to move the distal portion to an articulated condition away from the central longitudinal axis on a first side of the body and a distal-most position to move the distal portion to an articulated condition away from the central longitudinal axis on a second side of the body; and a control lever connected to the link member and pivotable about a point located along the body central longitudinal axis between a first position corresponding to the proximal-most position of the link member and a second position corresponding to the distal-most position of the link member.

Articulating apparatus for applying surgical fasteners to body tissue

There is provided a surgical coil fastener applier for use in applying helical coil fasteners in surgical procedures, such as hernia repair, to affix surgical mesh to tissue. The coil fastener applier includes a housing having a handle extending therefrom and a trigger pivotally mounted on the housing. An elongated tubular portion extends from the housing and includes a drive rod rotatably supported therein and slidably supporting a plurality of coil fasteners thereon. A drive assembly is provided within the housing to rotate the drive rod and coil fasteners. The drive assembly includes an anti-reverse mechanism to allow rotation of the drive rod in only one direction. An actuation assembly is provided within the housing to convert the motion of the trigger into rotary motion for supply to the drive assembly. The drive assembly includes structure to limit the amount of rotary motion supplied to the drive assembly. The drive assembly further includes a ratchet and pawl mechanism to prevent a partial cycling of the coil fastener applier. Also provided are various coil fasteners for use with the coil fastener applier.

Coil fastener applier

A needle assembly includes an elongate needle, a needle hub with an axial bore therethrough to receive and hold the needle projecting axially, the needle hub further is releasably mountable on a fluid handling device. The assembly has an elongate shield having an open proximal end, a distal end and a sidewall with an inside surface defining a cavity. There is an elongate aperture into the cavity from about the distal end to the proximal end. The assembly has a hinge that includes a mount for retaining the shield onto the hub, the mount has an opening therein that is sized and shaped to receive at least a portion of the needle hub. The shield is movable about the hinge by an off-axis pivotal movement between an initial closed position, an open position and a latched position. The assembly has a removable cover that is disposed over the elongate aperture in the shield and engaging the shield to hold it in the initial closed position. The cover is removable by a distal axial movement that also opens the shield, disengages the cover from the shield exposes at least the distal point of the needle. There is a latch for latching the shield to the mount when the shield is in the latched position.
