Catalyst compositions based on amorphous partially dehydrated zirconium hydroxide which are doped with from 0.01 to 20 atom percent of copper and/or from 0.01 to 20 atom percent of nickel, in each case based on zirconium, and have a specific surface area by the BET method of at least 50 m.sup.2 /g. The catalyst compositions are suitable, in particular, as the catalyst in hydrogen transfer reactions, such as, the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction or the Oppenauer oxidation. The preparation of 3-hydroxyquinuclidine of the formula: ##STR1## involves reaction of quinuclidin-3-one with a secondary alcohol in the presence of the amorphous partially dehydrated zirconium hydroxide.

A process for the catalytic conversion of halogenated hydroxymethylimidazoles to halogenated formylimidazoles. The catalysis takes place in the presence of a peroxide. Halogenated formylimidazoles are important intermediates for pharmaceutical active ingredients.

A process for preparing 4,6-bis(difluoromethoxy)pyrimidine derivatives of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a C.sub.1-4 -alkyl or optionally substituted phenyl or benzyl, proceeding from the corresponding 4,6-dihydroxypyrimidine dialkali-metal salt. In the process, the educt is reacted under pressure with chlorodifluoromethane in a solvent selected from the group consisting of the ketones, in the presence of a base and a phase-transfer catalyst and in the presence of 40 to 100 mol per mol of water of the 4,6-dihydroxypyrimidine dialkali-metal salt to form the final product.

A process for preparing imidazopyridine derivatives of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group, and R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are identical or different and are hydrogen, an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, an aralkyl group or a halogen atom. In this process, a 2-amino-3-nitropyridine is hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and the hydrogenation product is condensed with a carboxylic acid simultaneously present in the reaction mixture to give the end product. The imidazopyridine derivatives are intermediates for the preparation of angiotensin II antagonists.
