Power and control logic configurations for gas well dewatering systems are provided. In one example, a reservoir is configured to contain hydraulic, lubricating fluid. An electric motor is configured to receive fluid from the reservoir for lubrication and a hydraulic pump powered by the electric motor is configured to receive fluid from the reservoir and pump the fluid into a hydraulic circuit. A positive displacement oscillating pump is powered by the hydraulic pump and configured to pump fluid from the reservoir to an outlet from the well. The electric motor and hydraulic pump receive the same fluid from the reservoir for lubrication and to create pressure in the hydraulic circuit, respectively. A switching device is connected to the hydraulic circuit and is switchable between a first position wherein fluid pressure from the hydraulic pump causes the piston pump to move in a first direction and a second position wherein fluid pressure from the hydraulic pump causes the piston pump to move in a second direction.

Gas well dewatering system

A hanger system is provided for supporting a cable-supported dewatering pump in a gas well. A dewatering pump is supported in a downhole location by a cable. A cable hanger bears the weight of the cable and the weight of the dewatering pump. A pulling tool is configured to detachably connect to the cable hanger and to support the weight of the cable hanger, cable and gas well dewatering system as it is pulled out of a seated position in the well.

Integrated cable hanger pick-up system

A monitoring and control system for a dewatering pump configured to dewater a gas well is provided. A dewatering pump is driven at a first speed to pump fluid out of a well annulus. A fluid level detection device is configured to identify a change of fluid level in the well annulus occurring between a first time and a second, later time. A controller is configured to change the speed of the dewatering pump from the first speed to a second speed based upon the identified change in fluid level. Several embodiments of the fluid level detection devices are provided.

Monitoring and control system for a gas well dewatering pump

A linear actuator includes a substantially cylindrical magnetostrictive element disposed in a housing. A retainer is cooperatively engaged with the housing and an exterior of the magnetostrictive element such that relaxed portions of the magnetostrictive element are frictionally retained in the retainer. An actuator rod is functionally coupled to one longitudinal end of the magnetostrictive element. A biasing device is disposed between the housing and the retainer to maintain the retainer in lateral compression. The actuator includes magnets arranged to induce peristaltic motion in the magnetostrictive element.

Overpressure protection in gas well dewatering systems

Devices, systems and methods for equalizing pressure in a gas well are provided. A jar device is coupled to a pump deployed in a gas well between areas of low pressure and high pressure. The jar device includes a mandrel and a no-go sleeve. A jarring tool is operated to transfer an axial force onto the jar device that is large enough to shear a shearable connection between the mandrel and no-go sleeve and thereby cause the mandrel to slide from a first position to a second position with respect to the no-go sleeve. A seal that seals between the no-go sleeve and mandrel when the mandrel is located in the first position is unsealed as a result of the movement of the mandrel and thereby fluid communication is allowed between the area of high pressure and low pressure. This allows for easier retrieval of the pump.

Devices, systems and methods for equalizing pressure in a gas well

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a volumetric compensating annular bellows used to compensate two fluid volumes by an annular displacement. This is achieved using a bellows welded on to a tube with a varying shape radius. A bellows is arranged within the annulus and is deformable in an annular direction in response to fluid volume expansion. The bellows can be used in several oilfield applications for fluid compensation.

A system for testing a subterranean formation penetrated by a well includes a downhole tool configured to be coupled to a work string that includes a tool body having a longitudinal bore for circulating a fluid and at least one aperture configured to receive at least one module. The system further includes a plurality of modules that are each configured to engage the at least one aperture and at least one cavity configured for receiving a probe, and a plurality of probes that each include at least one orifice configured for testing the formation, wherein a first of the plurality of probes has a first configuration and a second of the plurality of probes has a second configuration.

Apparatus and methods to perform downhole measurements associated with subterranean formation evaluation

A directional casing drilling system including a casing string for rotation of a drill bit, a shaft coupled to the casing string, and a sleeve having pads that are hydraulically extensible. The sleeve may be positioned about a portion of the shaft. The invention may also include a tube connecting the sleeve to the drill collar, the tube adapted to conduct drilling fluid, and a valve system adapted to operatively conduct at least a portion of the drilling fluid to the pads whereby the pads move between an extended position and a retracted position.

Directional casing drilling

The invention refers to a drilling tool and method that, among other aspects, provides for a sleeve with expansible pads for positioning the drilling tool in the desired direction during drilling. The pads are hydraulically expanded and retracted by a valve system which selectively diverts mud flowing through the tool to the desired pads. The tool may also be provided with a flexible tube connecting the sleeve to drilling tool for maneuvering along deviations or curves in the wellbore.

A downhole tool and method are provided for collecting data from a subsurface formation during drilling operations. The tool includes a tubular mandrel adapted for axial connection in a drill string positioned in a wellbore penetrating the subsurface formation and a stabilizer element or sleeve positioned about the tubular mandrel for relative rotation between the stabilizer element and the tubular mandrel. A plurality of elongated ribs are connected to the stabilizer element. A means is connected to the stabilizer element for frictional engagement with a wall of the wellbore so as to prevent the stabilizer element from rotating relative to the wellbore wall. An actuator system is carried at least partially by the stabilizer element, and a probe is carried by one of the elongated ribs and adapted for movement by the actuator system between a retracted position within the one rib and an extended position engaging the wellbore wall such that the probe collects data from the formation. The method includes placing a non-rotating element of a tool positioned in a drill string in engagement with a wall of the wellbore such that the non-rotating element does not move relative to the wellbore wall. A probe carried by the non-rotating element is moved into sealed engagement with the wellbore wall to establish fluid communication between the formation and the non-rotating element, thereby enabling one or more properties of the formation fluid to be sensed.

Formation pressure measurement while drilling utilizing a non-rotating sleeve

An actively controlled rotary steerable drilling system for directional drilling of wells, the system having a rotary drive component rotatable within a tubular sliding tool collar that incorporates elastic anti-rotation members to maintain a coupled relation with the borehole wall during drilling. An offsetting mandrel is supported within the tool collar by a knuckle joint for pivotal movement and for rotation relative to the tool collar and has a lower end extending from the tool collar and supporting a drill bit. To achieve controlled steering of the rotating drill bit, orientation of the tool collar is sensed and the offsetting mandrel is maintained geostationary and selectively axially inclined relative to the tool collar by orienting it about the knuckle joint. An alternator and a hydraulic pump, located within the tool collar, are driven by relative rotation of the rotary drive component with the tool collar to produce electric power and hydraulic pressure for the electronics package of the tool and for actuation of hydraulic system components. Hydraulic cylinder and piston assemblies, actuated by tool position signal responsive solenoid valves, control the angular position of the offsetting mandrel with respect to the tool collar. The hydraulic pistons are servo-controlled responsive to signal input from tool position sensing systems such as magnetometers and accelerometers which provide real-time position signals to the hydraulic control system.

Rotary steerable well drilling system utilizing sliding sleeve

An actively controlled rotary steerable drilling system for directional drilling of wells including a tubular rotary tool collar having rotatably mounted thereabout a substantially non-rotatable sliding sleeve incorporating a plurality of elastic coupling members to maintain the sliding sleeve in coupled relation with the borehole wall during drilling. An offsetting mandrel is supported within the tool collar by a knuckle joint for pivotal movement and is rotatably driven by the tool collar and has a lower end extending from the collar and adapted for support of a drill bit. To achieve controlled steering of the rotating drill bit, orientation of the drilling tool is sensed by navigation sensors and the offsetting mandrel is maintained geostationary and selectively axially inclined relative to the tool collar by orienting it about the knuckle joint responsive to navigation sensors. An alternator and a hydraulic pump, located within the tool collar, are driven by a power source driven by the flowing drilling fluid to produce electric power and hydraulic pressure for supplying electrical power for the electronics package of the tool and for actuation of hydraulic system components. Hydraulic cylinder and piston assemblies, actuated by tool position signal responsive servo-valves, control the angular position of the offsetting mandrel with respect to the tool collar. The hydraulic pistons are servo-controlled responsive to signal input from the navigation sensors and from other tool position sensing systems which provide real-time position signals to the hydraulic position control system.
