An electrical water heater that receives a load shedding request signal uses a temperature sensor that is positioned so as to measure a water temperature in a lower area of a tank of the water heater. A controller continuously determines a salubrity index of the water heater as a function of the temperature measured by the sensor and a time measurement The controller decides to interrupt an electrical power supply of the water heater through a switch so as to interrupt or not interrupt an operation of the water heater upon receipt of the load shedding request signal and only if the salubrity index meets a preestablished criterion.

A power control device for use in an AC power grid for regulating an electrical power a load that is supplied by the AC power grid consumes. The power control device has a frequency sensing functional block for detecting a deviation of the grid frequency from a nominal grid frequency and a logic functional block for performing a load adjustment process during which the power the load consumption is reduced. The load adjustment process is based at least in part on the variation of the frequency of the AC power grid. The load adjustment process is design such that for a plurality of power control devices the individual response produce a grid-wide effect that compensates imbalance between power generation and load in fashion that may reduce unwanted distortion in the AC power grid, such as flicker.

A domestic electric water heater comprises a cylindrical tank having a vertical wall and an inwardly curved bottom, the latter defining with the vertical wall an annular stagnant water zone susceptible of bacterial contamination by, for example, legionella bacteria. The tank is provided with an upper immersion heating element and a lower immersion heating element, the latter being located above to the annular zone of contamination. The tank further comprises an outer electric heating element mounted on the outer surface of the vertical wall at the level of the contamination zone and below the lower immersion element. This outer heating element is capable of bringing water in the contamination zone to a temperature sufficient to eliminate the danger of such bacterial contamination, the temperature being in the order of 46.degree. C.
