Overbased metal-containing detergents

An improved polybutene-free lubricant composition for marine diesel engines, comprising a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity and, provided by admixing therewith, minor amounts of a) at least one of a borated dispersant or oil-soluble or oil-dispersible boron compound; and b) one or more overbased metal compounds the or each compound having a TBN of at least 300, with the proviso that if an overbased metal salicylate is present then the TBN of said salicylate is at least 200; wherein the TBN of the composition is at least 10 and the viscosity index of the composition is at least 90.

The present invention provides a method of making storage-stable road paving binders by blending a minor amount of an unsaturated polymer (e.g., having at least one diene monomer) with a major amount of asphalt at an elevated temperature such that the components are sufficiently fluid to blend; treating the asphalt-polymer blend with a sulfonating agent; and stripping the treated asphalt-polymer blend at an elevated temperature with sufficient stripping gas to remove strippable sulfur moieties and to stabilize the resulting stripped, treated blend. The invention also provides asphaltic compositions made by the method. The asphaltic compositions are useful as binders in road paving applications.

The use of a water-soluble hydroxyl di- or tri-carboxylic acid, generally in combination with an alkanolamine in an oil water fluid especially metal working or hydraulic fluids results in a fluid having excellent hard water compatibility, low foaming tendency in soft water and a good biostability; other additives such as emulsifiers, copper passivators and the like are generally present.

Aqueous fluid

Aqueous fluids having a good combination of anti-bacterial properties, stability in hard water, a reduced foaming tendency in soft water and at times a reduced boron content are obtained by the use as additive of a combination of a water-soluble hydroxy di- or tri- carboxylic acid an an excess of an alkanolamine, additive concentrates for incorporation into the aqueous fluids and the aqueous fluids themselves.

Improved dispersion of silicone antifoams in lubricating compositions is achieved by dissolving the antifoam in an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon of molecular weight below 330 and with a flash point above 140.degree. C.

In producing basic Calcium Sulphonate by carbonating mixtures of sulphonic acids, calcium hydroxide, alcohols and toluene the use of a narrowly defined temperature profile during carbonation enables product of improved oil solubility and viscosity to be obtained as well as leading to improved filterability.
