A method and apparatus is used for generating a perfectly random secret key between two or more transceivers in a wireless communication network. In a point-to-point system, both transceivers produce an estimate of the channel impulse response (CIR) based on the received radio signal. The CIR estimation is synchronized and may include error correction and detection. A long secret key of bits is generated from a digitized version of the CIR estimate, from which a perfectly secret encryption key is derived by privacy amplification.

Generation of perfectly secret keys in wireless communication networks

A method for transmitting an encrypted signal to a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) such that decryption of the encrypted signal depends on a trust zone associated with the WTRU is disclosed. The encryption may be performed using hierarchical modulation, scrambling, authentication, location validation, or a combination thereof. The size of a trust zone may also be adjusted.

Method and system for securing wireless communications

The present invention is a method and apparatus for the detection of portable electronic device functionality. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention includes a chemically coated antenna to serve as a trigger for device functionality detection. The chemically coated antenna may be passively or actively detected. In active detection, a detection apparatus releases a chemical which reacts or otherwise respods with the chemical trigger in a detectable manner. The detection apparatus detects the reaction, which is specific to the functionality of the portable electronic device. In passive detection, a detection device simply detects the chemical trigger, which is specific to the portable electronic device functionality. Other trigger embodiments utilizing optics, radio frequency (RF) signals, sound waves, and magnetic identification are also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for detecting portable electronic device functionality

A method and apparatus for providing a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) with access to at least one peripheral device, and/or at least one peripheral device associated with an available auxiliary device. The current peripheral device requirements of the WTRU are determined. The radio frequency (RF) environment of the WTRU is scanned to determine if there are any available wireless peripheral devices or wireless auxiliary devices proximate to the WTRU. A determination is also made as to whether there is a wired peripheral device or a wired auxiliary device available. A list of currently available peripheral devices is compiled by scanning at least one peripheral device registry associated with at least one of a wireless auxiliary device and a wired auxiliary device. The list is presented on the WTRU's display and a user selects at least one of the available peripheral devices from the list.

A method and apparatus for securing transmission of content created by a content generation device embedded in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) by determining what type of watermarks should be applied to the content and incorporating the watermarks in the content. The WTRU includes a content generation unit, a watermark incorporation unit, and a communication subsystem. The content generation unit is embedded in the WTRU and generates content, such as audio, video, image, text or a combination thereof. The watermark incorporation unit determines the type of watermarks that should be incorporated in the content and incorporates the watermarks in the content. A method and apparatus for selecting the most cost-efficient payment provider to pay for communication services. A calling electronic device communicates alternative payment provider data to a network via a communications link. The network examines costs charged by a plurality of alternative payment providers indicated by the alternative payment provider data. A method for scheduling RRM procedures in a wireless communication system begins by receiving at least one trigger, each trigger being associated with at least one RRM procedure. In a communications device operating with a blind signal separation (BSS) processor, an initial mixing matrix is formed based upon the different summations of the source signals received by the antenna array. The initial mixing matrix is evaluated to determine a minimum rank that is necessary for at least one source signal to be useable after having been separated from the initial mixing matrix and decoded. An additional mixing matrix is then formed, and also includes the different summations of the source signals. If the rank of the additional mixing matrix is less than the minimum rank associated with the initial mixing matrix, then the source signals are modified so that the rank of the additional mixing matrix is increased.

Signals encoded with watermark information are generated and broadcast into a protected area for capture by illicit recording devices along with their intended targets. An illicit recording in which at least a portion of the broadcast watermark signals are recorded is obtained and correlated with a known position of the broadcast watermark signals to yield the location of illicit recording devices. In an alternate embodiment, a surveillance device, being image and time synchronized with a signal broadcasting device, monitors and records the protected area. Illicit recordings containing the broadcast watermark are obtained and correlated with corresponding recordings taken by the surveillance device to identify the location of illicit recording devices. In an alternate embodiment, the surveillance device further monitors the quality of the broadcast watermark signals and adjusts them accordingly to achieve a desired quality level.

Method for watermarking recordings based on atmospheric conditions

An antenna design of compact dimensions is provided by incorporating the antenna structure into an integrated circuit or small circuit module. A radiation pattern adjustment mechanism permits dynamic, real-time adjustment of the antenna pattern in response to motion, repositioning, handovers, or other changing conditions. Pursuant to one preferred embodiment of the invention, the antenna includes a plurality of substantially conductive elements embedded into or formed on the integrated circuit. At least one of the conductive elements is coupled to a radiation pattern adjustment mechanism in the form of a switching diode or relay. The antenna elements are arranged in a manner so as to provide parasitic interaction.

Upon entry of a request to establish communications between calling and called electronic devices, the system initially looks towards a primary service provider. Absent acceptance of the request for service by the primary service provider, for whatever reason, the system automatically reverts to an alternative service provider and/or payment provider by searching data provided by the user and coupled to the electronic device for which a communication link is requested, eliminating the need for any further input by the user in the form of redialing the call, providing data through insertion of a debit or credit card, for example, identifying the alternative payment provider. The data identifying alternative service/payment providers may be contained in a card or chip removably insertable into the electronic device or in a storage device incorporated therein. Capability may be provided for choosing the most economic service/payment provider to be selected for honoring the request for service.
