A multi-valve engine comprises a plurality of intake and exhaust valves on a cylinder. Depending on use, one of the valves is made of higher heat-resistant material, and another is made of lower heat-resistant material, thereby decreasing cost and improving durability and reliability.

Multi-valve engine

A poppet valve moves up and down in a valve operating mechanism in an internal combustion engine. A cylindrical fixed electrode is fixed to a support plate on a cylinder head, and a cylindrical moving electrode is mounted to the lower surface of a valve spring retainer which is mounted to the poppet valve via a cotter. The fixed electrode is connected to a circuit which comprises a variable condenser and a resistance. The valve moves up and down during firing operation of the engine. Thus, variation in electrostatic capacity is detected by the two electrodes, transmitted to a circuit via a lead mounted to the fixed electrode, and converted to a voltage by the circuit, thereby detecting valve position exactly.

Valve position detector

A poppet valve moves up and down in a valve operating mechanism in an internal combustion engine. A fixed electrode is supported on a cylinder head, and a moving electrode is carried by the poppet valve. The fixed electrode is connected to a circuit, which together comprises a variable condenser and a resistance. The valve moves up and down during firing operation of the engine. Variation in electrostatic capacitance is detected by means of the two electrodes, transmitted to the circuit via a lead and a ground connection, and converted to a voltage by the circuit, thereby enabling detecting valve position more exactly.

A method of manufacturing and Al alloy tappet, used in an internal combustion engine, includes supplying wear resistant particles on a surface of a light metal tappet body, the surface slideably contacting a cam, kneading said particles with a surface layer of the surface of the tappet body to imbed them and then changing the surface layer after kneading to a flat surface.

Method of manufacturing tappet in an internal combustion engine

An Al alloy poppet valve is used in an internal combustion engine. The poppet valve comprises a valve stem and a valve head at the end of the valve stem. The valve head has a tapered valve face, which is engaged on a valve seat when an inlet port is closed by the poppet valve. The valve face has a thermal hardened layer on the surface and an inner alloy layer, thereby increasing mechanical strength to provide high durability and reliability.

Al or Al alloy poppet valve and a method of manufacturing the same

A tappet is used in an internal combustion engine. A cam-slidably-contacting member is placed on a top wall of a tappet body via diffusing material that includes a mixture of one or more elements of Zn, Mg, Sn, Cu and Pb. The cam-slidably-contacting member and the tappet body are pressed with the diffusing material held therebetween, so that the diffusing material is diffused into the tappet body and the cam-slidably-contacting member until the layer of the diffusing material does not substantially remain, and a tappet of high strength is formed.

Method of manufacturing a tappet

A tappet made of light metal comprises a ceiled cylindrical tappet body made of light metal, and a cam receiving plate made of hard metal which has the same outer diameter as that of the tappet body, and which is provided at its outer peripheral edge with a sharp annular piece, the cam receiving plate being integrally coupled to the tappet body by causing the annular piece to bite into the top surface and welding the annular piece and the top surface. With this structure, the tappet body and the cam receiving plate made of different materials can be bonded strongly.

Tappet made of light metal and a method of manufacturing the same

A tappet made of Al alloy is used in a valve operating mechanism of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle. On the whole outer circumferential surface of the tappet, a helical projection and a helical groove are formed alternately to form an uneven surface. A plurality of uneven surfaces are formed on a ridge of the projection at regular intervals. The outer circumferential surface is coated with a wear resistant Fe film by thermal spraying. The uneven surfaces on the projection provide high adhesion strength of the film to the outer circumferential surface of the tappet to improve peel resistance, thereby increasing durability and reliability of the Al alloy tappet.

Method of manufacturing a wear resistant cylinder

A tappet is used in an internal combustion engine. A cam-slidably-contacting member is placed on a top wall of a tappet body via diffusing material which comprises mixture of one or more elements of Zn, Mg, Sn, Cu and Pb. The cam-slidably-contacting member and the tappet body are pressed with the diffusing material held therebetween, so that the diffusing material is diffused into the tappet body and the cam-slidably-contacting member until a layer which comprises only the diffusing material does not substantially remain to form the tappet having high strength.

Tappet in an internal combustion engine and a method of manufacturing

An Al alloy tappet used in an internal combustion engine has a spiral groove on the outer circumferential surface of a tappet body. The spiral groove is formed by pushing a cutting tool against the outer circumferential surface and feeding it in an axial direction. Near the lower end of the tappet body, feed rate is decreased, and the cutting tool is moved away from the tappet body to form a smaller spiral groove which increases in diameter downwards. The outer circumferential surface of the tappet body is covered with a coating layer such as Fe, and the lower end which has the smaller spiral groove is chamfered.

Method of forming a tappet in an internal combustion engine

Wear resistant tappet

Between the end of a valve and a valve-operating cam in an internal combustion engine, a valve lifter is inserted. A filler enclosing portion is formed between a shim and the body of the valve lifter. Through an opening from an injector, a filler is introduced into the filler enclosing portion, so that valve clearance is corrected to zero. Differences in valve clearance can be easily corrected.

Method of adjusting a valve clearance

A tappet for use in an internal combustion engine comprises Al-alloy base material and a sprayed layer on the outer surface which is slidable with a cylinder head. The sprayed layer is made of Fe-alloy which comprises not more than 0.1% by weight of C, 0.6-2.0% by weight of Mn and the balance of Fe, thereby providing high hardness, high toughness and low cost. The sprayed layer may further contain 0.1-1.0% by weight of Si.
