In a DVD-R on which information is to be recorded by an information recording apparatus, prior to the recording of the information therein, there are recorded in advance at least identification information for identifying the information recording apparatus for recording the information onto the DVD-R, and recording parameter information containing optimization information for optimizing a recording state in the record processing executed by the information recording apparatus specified by the identification information. There is provided a recording reproducing apparatus which is ready for use of recording media different in form and mode. The apparatus is comprised of a mounting member in a rotatable manner toward a clamping position CL, another mounting member arranged in the mounting member in a rotatable manner, cam members for rotating the mounting member , and a cam block for rotating the mounting member . The mounting member mounts thereon a turn table for clamping the recording medium, and an optical pickup , and the mounting member mounts thereon another optical pickup . When an open recording medium DS is inserted, the mounting members are rotated to be horizontal to the clamping position CL, whereby the optical pickup carries out recording or reproduction of information. On the other hand, when a cartridge type recording medium CDS is placed, the mounting member is rotated to be horizontal to the clamping position CL, whereby the optical pickup carries out recording or reproduction of information. During the recording or reproduction, the mounting member is rotated in a direction away from the cartridge type recording medium CDS, to thereby keep the optical pickup from contact with the same.

A dye record disc has a disc shape substrate having a track-forming surface divided into a read-only area and a recordable area. A reproducing track is formed on the track-forming surface in the read-only area, and has a plurality of pits, each of the pits comprising a dye material, and having a shape corresponding to the reproducing information. A recording/reproducing track is formed on the track-forming surface in the recordable area, and extends continuously, the recording/reproducing track comprising the same dye material as each of the pits. A disc cartridge includes an upper lid and a lower lid for housing an optical disc or a magneto-optical disc between them. The disc cartridge also includes amechanism for making a gap between the upper lid and the lower lid varable. The mechanism increases a clearance between the surface of the disc housed in the disc cartridge and the inner surface of the upper and lower lids when the disc cartridge is inserted in an information recording and reproducing device. The mechanism may also increase a clearance between the outer rim of the disc and the inner wall of the disc cartridge when the disc cartridge is inserted in an information recording and reproducing device.
